If this guy was thought to have early round stuff as a pitcher before the injury - why wasn't he pitching?

Tommy John surgery, most teams won’t take a chance on a guy coming off Tommy John. However the Yankees did with Clarke Schmidt from South Carolina a few years ago and it paid off nice for them.

I think the Tennessee attraction for Reggie Crawford is Coach Anderson. Reggie has only pitched 7 and 2/3 innings in college baseball. Granted he struck out 17 and had a 95 + fastball before injury, but Is that a large enough sample size (considering TJ surgery recovery) to warrant an early round draft pick.

He is a big strong kid with very good hitting numbers as a first baseman. I suspect we are interested in him as a left handed power pitcher. His situation reminds me of Ben Joyce's. If he slips in the draft and decides to come to Tennessee as a pitcher, I think he would be used cautiously.

Before injury he was projected as a first round draft pick. Currently, he is projected anywhere from 45th to 79th.

I'm missing something here. This is a paragraph from the Hartford newspaper:

Crawford, 20, has played mostly at first base in his two seasons at UConn, pitching only eight innings in seven games and striking out 17. In the Cape Cod League and with USA Baseball’s Collegiate National Team last summer, he showed off a fastball touching 101 mph. Baseball scouts and draft analysts began projecting him as a top-10 pick in the 2022 MLB draft.

So my question is still - why wasn't he pitching at Uconn? If he was good enough in the summer following his soph year to have everybody drooling and projecting him top 10 - why did he pitch less than Jake Fitzgibbons for his college team?

He had the surgery fall of 21, so this fall he'll be one year out. I think he'll start throwing in the fall lightly, build up his arm and stamina and then if everything goes right, he could pitch live in the spring. I would think that would be the earliest timeline. Some say it takes two full years to recover from TJ surgery although you can throw after that first year. If he is thinking of staying in college to up his draft stock, and wants to be a weekend starting pitcher this coming season, then it doesn't make sense he's looking at Tennessee because we have no automatic starter openings. But if he views a two year recovery, with bullpen work this season and then starting the next year, then it makes sense, as we will be losing Dolly after this season. And we could use a lefty power pitcher starter.

Tommy John surgery. He didn’t play an inning in 2022.

I apologize to you and @OldTimer. I must not be making myself clear. I understand why he didn't pitch in 2022. He hurt his arm in October 2021 and had TJ surgery and missed the 2022 college season. I get that. But he wasn't hurt during the 2020 or 2021 college seasons and he only pitched 8 total innings - 1/3 of an inning in 2020 and 7 2/3 of an inning in 2021. If this guy is thought to be 1st round material - why was he barely getting to pitch for his college team BEFORE the injury?

Not sure if anyone knows at this point. He could have had lingering arm trouble from High School or he was recruited to hit and play defense first. Good question, unless someone on here knows him or any players at UConn, we may never find know

Tell me about it. They are absolutely killing it. Even their assistant pitching coach hire was a grand slam.
Expectations can be such a killer. Many of those fans will not settle for anything less than a national championship. It will be interesting to see what happens going forward, but winning it all takes several factors going your way late in a season. I can’t imagine more pressure than LSU will have this season.

Like us last season as the season progressed..

I hope BaseVols fans temper their expectations, and not assume that Omaha is automatic. Just making the CWS is a tremendous feat and painstakingly difficult. Look at how long it took Ole Miss to win a natty. Look at the sustained success at Arkansas without a natty. Baseball MAY be the hardest sport to win a NC. Amazing that 1999 Miami was the last #1 team to win one. Let’s be realistic and appreciate the 2023 team without expecting Omaha.

very well said however many a$$hat drivebys think if you don't win every game it's a season of failure, and it drives me crazy!!!

On another note, Skenes is still in play......no guarantee but the staff is still pursuing.

The pitching coach will never throw a ball so because he was a pitching coach in the big leagues everybody all giddy. Not to argue but do not bank completely this is major deal just yet.
