College football playoff

I'm still waiting for someone to show me a single year in which more than 4 teams deserved a shot at the National Title once the bowls were over. Oh, that's right. They can't because such a season doesn't exist. People who propose a playoff are doing nothing more than trying to NFLize college football and turn the most meaningful regular season in sports into nothing more than a warmup for a tournament.

OK. Just show me who the best 4 teams are every year. Show me this proof that you have that the 4th best team is always better than the 5th best team in these grand polls the media puts together.

Well of course, since you say so.
there you go, now you're coming around......

seriously though....it's not that i'm against a play off, i'm against any post season system that would devalue the regular season. taking the top 8 or top 16 teams is ridiculous, cause then what would it matter if you won your conf. or not? what about the conf. that have title games, those that dont? the playing feild is not exactly level when determining all that, so until it is, and conf. champions are the qualifier, not your ranking, for any kind of tournament type playoff, i'm against it.

the BCS has worked, believe it or not, more times than not. and the number of games and format already exists for the plus one to happen.

so yes, you can take me at my word, cause i said so.:p

Neither the fourth nor fifth place team should have a shot. I'll use the BCS as a guide. There hasn't been a season since 1998 in which simply playing one more game wouldn't have removed all reasonable debate. If you guys want a bunch of 9-3 teams in a playoff, have at it. You'll get exactly what the NCAA basketball tournament is getting now. Decreasing ratings due to a diluted product.

A 16 team playoff is the dumbest idea in sports since the designated hitter and multipurpose stadiums.

Bowl games need college football a lot more then college football needs bowl games. Take away the bowls and create a playoff and most fans would happier. So why does the NCAA bow to the bowl games?? Someone is getting $$$$$$ to keep the status quo.

Hat,
in reality i dont' disagree, but i could live with it if winning the conf was the qualifier...i'm like you, the plus one makes the most sense.

and let's not forget...we're in the middle of the playoffs right now. each week from here on in, conf. matchups will be determining division champs and conf. champs and ultimately who will be playing in the BCS games.

it truly is the greatest thing since slices bread and i never want to see that part of college football changed.

I care nothing about ratings, I am not arguing this from a monetary point of view. To allow conference champions to play one another for a title does not seem like diluted product to me. But then of course we are worried about diluting college football. That is why we have 87 bowl games and teams playing one another for the right to hoist the Starbucks Coffee trophy.

the universities and conferences are getting a ton of money frome the bowl system and TV deals.....that's one primary reason the school presidents don't want that to go away.

half the teams in D1 play in bowls every year.......

I hope college football never goes to overtime, it will ruin it for the traditionalists. College football will be ruined. It will be NFL'izing it.

Oh wait Allvol123, college football does have overtime. It was the reason every cf fan in America was glued to the UK/LSU game last week until the very last play. Damn crazy changes, ruining college football.

If they had the NFL overtime, people would have been glued to the set for about 10 minutes.

completely agree. do we really want a situation where teams can consider resting players during the last game of the season (generally the rivalry game), or the conference championship game, because they know they are making the playoffs? The fact that every game counts is what makes college football the best sport in america.

actually a good point. esp. for teams ranked in the top 10 that would have to play in a conf. championship game....they already view it as a penalty anyway, this would give them the opp to do just that.....

nice try, but completely off the mark. no one said change is bad. stupid change is bad. like the clock rules from last year. bad idea. scholarship limitations, good idea. Overtime, good idea.

tournament style playoff.....bad idea.

Many people were crying like babies when overtime was first proposed. Why is overtime a good idea to you? You mean you are actually in favor of seeing a dispute settle on the field? You wouldn't rather have the more highly touted team just voted winner of a tie game?

Maybe my memory is fading, but I don't know where I said anything about a 16 team playoff. Or are we just throwing out random thoughts now?

Traffic jams suck.
Then tell me how many teams you want, Kreskin. You obviously have figured out this magnificient system that has eluded all others.

Another recent development. Conference championhip games have also proven to be absolute busts. Anyone ever been to one of those dreadful things in Atlanta. A snore fest.

none of these things are the issue (and i was for both of them btw) i stand by what i've said previously. a playoff would devalue the reg. season.

Yeah, the Big XII has produced some thrillers. That Georgia Tech-Wake Forest ACC title game last year may be the single greatest event I've ever witnessed. What would we do without the MAC title game? I fear the end of time if that weren't played.
