College Hoops Around The Country [TN opponents, RPI, others]

Ticket right now as Powell isn’t producing and Ticket was always a good defender
Ticket would play over Powell just because that’s how Barnes does it. He’d actually be a pretty decent player on this roster. Though not get even as close to as much time as he is at GMU

He could play some small ball 4 for us, fits his game best and what this team lacks…JJJ is the only guy that can do it on our team, I think he’d be getting 8-10mpg here.

True. But, I feel like he left because he didn’t want just 8-10 MPG. He wanted a larger role, and I can’t blame him. I think he made a good choice for himself.

SLU is better than half the SEC. In his game against Kansas this year he had 15 pts and 12 rbs. Against Maryland he had 14 pts 10 rbs
I meant that he plays on a team full of mid-major guys and now sticks out vs playing at Tennessee chock full of high-major talent.

Sure, he may have continued to develop and earn more time at Tennessee, but I have a hard time believing he'd go from averaging 3.6 minutes, 0.7 pts, and 0.7 rebs per game for Tennessee as a sophomore to routinely putting up double-doubles against high-major teams as a junior. Just too much talent and competition amongst his own teammates.

Oh I agree, just saying I don’t think they would’ve saw him as a guard or be buried on depth chart…probably would’ve been 8th man.

Yeah I said he wouldn’t play anywhere near as many minutes as he is. But I think he’d be a decent role player on this roster.

I don't disagree. My original comment wasn't in response to anything you (particularly) did/didn't say. I was just making a general observation with regards to how he compares to a player like JJJ, who is probably the most like him of any current player we have on our roster.

On that note, I suggested that Gaines would be just another guy on our roster; someone like Uros, perhaps. Moderate playing time, modest production.

It now seems like we're on the same page in that regard, so I was confused by you pointing out that Gaines had dropped double-doubles on Kansas, Maryland, and SLU when those games seem to be merely opportunistic given he played almost every available minute and is clearly one of the best players on his team. Neither of those would be true at Tennessee. Another point we seem to agree on.

I just meant him standing out on a mid major isn’t just due to the level of competition. He’s played well against some of the more talented teams they’ve faced.

I think he’s definitely as good as Uros. And ORN too. But we have no competition at their positions

I think when you look at transfers such as Gaines and Drew Pember, you see their true abilities come through as they go mid-major. There’s something about the pressure put on these kids where they think they have to be perfect to get playing time. Pressure at practice, pressure to perform for 3 minutes when playing time arrives, pressure to look good for coaches, and on and on. Neither Gaines or Pember showed good shooting ability in those minutes they played, even though we knew they had these abilities and more. Fast forward to this season, and both those kids have been remarkable. I love watching their success.

Yeah, I never meant to imply that. My statement was entirely based on the idea of being a big fish in a small pond within his own team at GMU vs Tennessee, not relative to the level of competition he is playing against. It seems to be all about opportunity. Opportunity exists at GMU that didn't/doesn't exist at Tennessee and his talent is near the top of their roster and more towards the average range at Tennessee.
