College Hoops Around The Country [TN opponents, RPI, others]

One of the weirder stories this year to me is Oregon State. How many teams have gone from the Elite Eight to going 3-27, 1-19 in conference? Ethan Thompson was everything for them.

On the other side you have Iowa State that went 2-21 last season and are 21-10 this season and was ranked for a big part of the early season. Weird stuff.

That one makes a little more sense-they have a new coach and their top 5 scorers are transfers and a freshman. They rebuilt the roster. Really good job though, as they have some quality wins.

On the flip side, Oregon State returned almost everybody. Thompson was far and away their best recruit and then their best player.

I think the commentators in this Gonzaga/San Fransisco game are going to wet their pants with how excited they're getting by constantly praising Chet Holmgren. I've heard them compare Holmgren to Bill Russell, called Holmgren one of the best defenders we've ever seen, and said that Holmgren is "nearly flawless". Geez how about calling the game....

It seems like the best way to beat Gonzaga is to attack the basket and go right at Holmgren and try and get him in foul trouble. Whenever he is in the game they’ve dominated, but the moment his butt hits the seat San Fran is able to get a few small runs. I’d be interested to see what his +/- is at the end of the game.

With the right coach, locking down the talent around Atlanta and a commitment from the school to up their game and facilities in basketball, yes they can, imo
That second part is the key. They've had decent talent coaching and players. The investment just isn't there from the AD in my opinion.

Could ga pull a similar type of turn around to auburn with the right hire?
I’ve long held the opinion that UGA is a sleeping giant in the SEC. For whatever reason, they’ve just never put it all together. It must be a lack of commitment to the program from the athletic department, but they hired a “name” coach in Crean, they have ample instate talent, and there isn’t another elite instate program to compete with. Tech does have more historical success, but they are currently ACC’s version of Vanderbilt.

Auburn was the doormat of the conference before Pearl took over, so with that level of commitment from UGA’s administration, there is no reason to believe they can’t make a similar leap into relevancy.
