College Hoops Around The Country [TN opponents, RPI, others]

I listened to Parrish’s local radio show for years before he left for a bigger opportunity to host a Grizzlies podcast. He’s really not biased and has been critical of Memphis for years before hiring Penny and would even explain why Memphis didn’t deserved being ranked at times the last few years.

As far as UT, he respects Barnes, but IMO, he and his CBS colleagues use Barnes’ mediocrity in March against him. It’s kind of a “see it to believe it” type of thing.
I think, for whatever reasons, he’s become biased the last 5-6 years concerning Tennessee. Maybe I don’t see all you see living in Memphis, but it seems Parrish has been more willing to be more critical of Tennessee since Grant left.

That's kind of how I view it as well, and maybe it's because we didn't win more with Grant and Admiral that he's become that way. But I definitely have seen a shift in his perspective of Tennessee in that time-frame.

I wondered if somebody has put a “muzzle” on his reporting. I’m not saying he’s been threatened, but possibly pressured into being less friendly towards Tennessee. He was all over Grant with interviews and the like not that long ago, but clearly is not as friendly towards the Vols now.

Mediocrity in March is such a tired narrative. At UT only Devoe and Pearl have been to the NCAAT more times than CRB. Barnes ties them with 6x this season and passes them as #1 all time next season. Only Martin and Pearl have a better NCAAT winning percentage (but Martin only made the tournament in 1 of 3 years and his 3-1 record includes the play-in game).

Barnes is one of only 4 UT coaches with an SECT championship and just 1 of 2 in the modern era of the tournament.

I don’t think that mediocre is the correct word. It’s lazy and ill informed to use.

I think he would tell you that it’s time to quit if he can’t think on his own. I can say that on his show, he would talk about having to update his top 25 and one quite often. It wasn’t his favorite, but his bosses wanted him to do it because it drives traffic and responses.

I figured I would get a response from that. You can read my history about my stance on Barnes. I’m very happy he’s our coach. I just typed that response quickly, and those were words that they would probably use. It’s not really my thoughts.

I love Barnes and the way he runs the program. He has us consistently ranked, often in the top 10. We’ve had some really good teams since Grant / Admiral with the talent to potentially be in the final four a few times. They’ve certainly not been mediocre compared to the field but compared to their potential and how well they played during the regular season, it’s not an insult to view the tournament results as mediocre in that light. JMO, TIFWIW, AARP

Well, Barnes has ‘only’ won 50% of his NCAAT games at UT. UT is a game under ,500 or 2 games under if you throw out Cuonzo’s play in game.

Since the SECT is in “March” and CRB went to 3x tournament finals out of the 4 SECTs from 2018 thru 2022 ‘mediocre in March’ isn’t correct.

Barnes has won 50% of his NCAAT games at UT and 66% of all games at UT, BUT… you don’t get to play the Woffords and TN Techs in the NCAAT. EVERY opponent is a very good team. Plus half or more of the regular season games are true home games. So it’s logical that most good coaches (the ones that get to the NCAAT regularly) won’t have as good of a winning percentage in the NCAAT.

ALSO, CRB gets criticized for underperforming the seed. However, UT isn’t like Duke and UNC and get de facto home games only an hour or two away from campus that first weekend. UT gets put into the scenario of being a higher seed but must then play in front of hostile crowds pulling for the under dogs.

So I disagree with “mediocrity”. Unfortunate or unlucky makes more sense to me.

This reminds me of back in the day when they said Jim Boeheim would never win a championship.

Nkamhoua finished with 9 points(3-5 FG/2-2 3PT/1-4 FT), 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 1 steal in 29 minutes.

Ledlum had 4 points(1-7 FG/1-3 3PT/1-2 FT), 5 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 block, 4 turnovers in 25 minutes.
Nkamhoua's rebounding has been a pleasant surprise in his new home. That was my biggest complaint about him. He was so inconsistent with his effort in that area. There were nights he was outreboubded by Zeigler who is a foot shorter than him.

Big night tonight in college hoops. Going to stay up late tonight and watch them:
8:00pm #4 Marquette @ #23 Illinois
9:30pm #1 Kansas vs (N) #17 Kentucky

This will be good to watch because we will for sure play Illinois and Kentucky, and we have the potential to play one of Kansas or Marquette in Maui.

Going to be a fun night

Don’t forget Duke and MSU play at 7:30

Also two interesting game to watch tonight would be:

6:00pm Wisconsin @ Providence
8:00pm #13 Texas A&M @ SMU

Not a ranked matchup, but interesting to see how good Wisconsin is against a decent team on the road led by Kim English with Davonte Gaines still on the team.

Another 2-0 Texas A&M road test against 3-0 BJ Edwards and Rob Lanier.

Do we have an answer for that 7'4" beast for Purdue?

That will be a fun matchup for Aidoo to see how he can defend. But, I assume our staff will watch the FDU tape and try and mimic some of that albeit Purdue isn’t the exact same team.

I think the key is understanding you aren’t going to shutdown Edey. You beat Purdue by shutting down everyone else. Guard the perimeter well, keep them from hitting 3’s and you can win. Edey will always get his points. You just can’t let their guards get loose.

The key to beating Purdue is shutting down their 3PT shooters. Let Eddy do his thing because there's not much you can do with him honestly. Press them full court and they have showed to struggle badly.

IMHO - no. Aidoo doesn’t have the weight or strength to stop Edey from getting whatever low post position he desires. Awaka is giving up 8+ inches. Our best chance is to speed the game up as much as possible to prevent Purdue from running their base half court offense. I’d consider running a full court press the entire game to eat away at their shot clock. TIFWIW

Purdue will lose a lot of games when they take over 25 3-pointers and only make 5 of them. And Edey only had one foul, so the refs didn’t take him out. Just bad play by the guys not named Edey.

This. Few teams will have the depth we do. You can mitigate Edey’s impact by running them into the ground. I don’t care how well Edey is conditioned, a 7’4” center is going to get exhausted if he is forced to run up and down the court. Play fast, run him down, and maybe he is less effective later in the game.
