I agree 100%. O'Neil was a defensive wizard. Running away was his downfall, not coaching.KO had Marquette on a roll and had TN turning the corner. After having his hissy fit at TN and running off all butt hurt, his reputation and ability to put together a good program fell off the cliff.
Northwestern might be the worst basketball program in the Big 10. Plus KO bounced around so much taking over failed programs his winning percentage obviously wasn’t going to be impressive.
I witnessed it. He was building a very good program at TN and handed it off to Green. KO would have taken UT further than what CJG stumbled into.
Not really any interesting games tonight.
Lots of potential blowouts.
Clemson at UNC
OSU at Houston
Butler at UCONN
Only game that maybe be competitive is
Ole Miss @ South Carolina..
Yes, they were terribly boring. He had basically a crapola roster. The guy was absolutely an incredibly unbelievable recruiter. The talent he was accumulating was top-tier in a number of ways. He was absolutely responsible for assembling what would end up being the best collection of talent since the Ernie and Bernie years.Yes - see above post. They were so boring I couldn’t stand to watch them
Not to add more fuel to this fire, but KO finished his 16 year (15 if you don't count his arizona interim year) collegiate head coaching career with a 45.1% win percentage and a single piece of hardware (great Midwest regular season championship).
We can debate til we're blue in the face about what he did well and didn't do well. The fact of the matter is he wasn't a good coach for one reason or another. To paraphrase Moneyball, "if he's such a good coach, then why doesn't he coach good?" Part of college coaching is making peace with those around you and learning to live in the athletic department system (I'm completely ignoring winning games, here). He could never get it done. He had plenty of opportunities to prove it.
