i watched the first season of the UK version and i couldn't get through it. I think it follows under the douchebags who feel that anything foreign or british must be superior to the american version.
I don't think this is true. The British one was built much more on awkward tension. The US certainly has that too, but they added a lot more personalities to the show and additional humor that isn't purely situation awkwardness.
Gervais was a genius when they created that show. His acting, and lack of experience, made the show excellent. However, when they used the original scripts for the US version, it just didn't work as well. They quickly changed and started incorporating a bigger supporting cast.
How can you not love 'Free Love on the Free Love Freeway?' 'She's dead.' 'She's not dead.'

As for one being better, that's a subjective call. I wouldn't put either one above the other. Both are excellent.
As for stand up comedians, the best folks I've seen live are (in no particular order):
Rich Voss
Jim Gaffigan
Dave Attel
Arj Barker
David Cross/Bob Odenkirk
Brian Posehn
Dave Mordall
Hedberg
Lewis Black
Doug Benson
In San Fran a few years ago, I caught the Marijunalogues in a comedy club. It was Arj Barker, Doug Benson, and Tony Camin going on for 2 hours about weed. Absolutely hilarious. Mr. Show Live at the Warfield was also an excellent show with David, Bob, and a bunch of their friends.
