Comedians

they changed it because the majority of Americans don't enjoy the same kind of humor that the Brits do. Personally, I found the UK version 24,502,729 times better than the American one. They wanted to copy it and changed it to something that would work over here. It happens all the time.
Exactly.

I'll have to add more later but just what's on the top of my head now:

Richard Pryor - This man was comic GOLD. Listen to all of his albums you can get your hands on and I don't think you'll be disappointed. Some of the stuff is now obviously dated material but there's still plenty of hilarious stuff from him.

Bernie Mac - He was great in his time. He just had the timing and the storytelling ability and took alot from Pryor.

Mitch Hedberg - This guy might not be for everyone but I thought he was awesome. Too bad he OD'd right when he was about to get a big TV break. He was one funny dude IMO.

James Gregory - I prefer his comedy over Carrington's personally. Carrington is also a good one but Gregory just makes me bust out laughing.

Dane Cook - He's hit and miss but mostly hit. He has some real funny bits.

John Pinnette - This guy and his "fat guy" gimmick is great. Some of the buffet stories and such are just very funny.

Jim Gaffigan - He's another one of my favorite comedians now. His stuff is just different and I think he has one of the funniest bits I've ever heard when he's talking about religious confusion.

George Carlin - He's also definitely not for everyone but he had good stuff IMO. He was still very good all the way up until his final special last year.

Lewis Black - Here's another one alot of people might not care for. I find his humor dead on though for the most part and its also something just a bit different than other's humor attempts. I think he's highly underrated as a comedian.

1) I've watched both series of the UK version. While humorous, it isn't as funny as the American version.

2) The humor is definitely different. The characters are different. They tried to make the characters pretty much exact replicas in the first season of the US version, and the ratings were poor. They changed the Michael character and the show got much better ratings.

i watched the first season of the UK version and i couldn't get through it. I think it follows under the douchebags who feel that anything foreign or british must be superior to the american version.

I don't think this is true. The British one was built much more on awkward tension. The US certainly has that too, but they added a lot more personalities to the show and additional humor that isn't purely situation awkwardness.

Gervais was a genius when they created that show. His acting, and lack of experience, made the show excellent. However, when they used the original scripts for the US version, it just didn't work as well. They quickly changed and started incorporating a bigger supporting cast.

How can you not love 'Free Love on the Free Love Freeway?' 'She's dead.' 'She's not dead.' :post-4-1090547912:

As for one being better, that's a subjective call. I wouldn't put either one above the other. Both are excellent.

As for stand up comedians, the best folks I've seen live are (in no particular order):
Rich Voss
Jim Gaffigan
Dave Attel
Arj Barker
David Cross/Bob Odenkirk
Brian Posehn
Dave Mordall
Hedberg
Lewis Black
Doug Benson

In San Fran a few years ago, I caught the Marijunalogues in a comedy club. It was Arj Barker, Doug Benson, and Tony Camin going on for 2 hours about weed. Absolutely hilarious. Mr. Show Live at the Warfield was also an excellent show with David, Bob, and a bunch of their friends.

while I agree with all the others, these three I must disagree. Cook is hit and miss in that everything he's taken from someone else is still funny. I can't stand Pinnette anymore. The first go through of his routines was funny, but now that I realize being fat is his only routine, I find him boring. Carrington is immensely better than Gregory. I can enjoy most of Gregory's stuff, but for a while there he focused way too much on his fear of flying. I'd go check him out when he comes to Kingsport next month if I didn't have to work a game.

That was a list I made on another forum and transported it here when I saw the topic. I will agree with Pinette - I have seen some more of his recent stuff and its just not as funny anymore. That first special of his though that I caught had me in tears.

I also will give you the fact that I didn't enjoy Dane Cook's most recent special nearly as much. And I wasn't aware that he had stolen alot of his stuff from others.

I would like to catch Gregory in Kingsport - heck he was RIGHT HERE in Greeneville last year and I had something I had to do that night and couldn't go see him then.

I think I need to also throw out honorable mentions to Patton Oswalt, Mitch Fatel (in moderation), and I just listened to Harland Williams Har-Licious special the other day and thought it was really good for him.

I'm always trying to find new stuff though so will use this topic to catch some of the guys I'm not as familiar with. I download these guys to my MP3 and listen to them while walking for exercise and mowing the yard. So I'm always looking for new stuff I haven't heard.....

Louis Black my favorite....and to a lesser extent, and you gotta be in the right mood...Sinbad.

That's pretty much my exact list. I would have to throw in Pablo Francisco as well.

When I was at The Laugh Factory in LA, Bob Saget made a surprise appearance. He showed up while he was out with his family to say hi to the owners and they ended up talking him into doing a set. Funny thing was before anyone knew he was going to be there I was in the bathroom and as I was leaving I bumped into him and I just glanced up and said "excuse me" and after I walked out I took a couple sets and I was like, was that bob saget? And sure enough he came out and did a set. He was hilarious and as dirty as he always is. We were in the front row so he basically called all my friends and me gay and said that we all had small d*cks.
