Coming after Vitello

But this also goes against your theory on not recruiting young guys. The top guys in each HS class are committing very early, typically as 9th graders. For us to be able to recruit the best in HS, we have to understand that whether it is a good practice or not, we need to be able to go get the best talent as soon as they are determined which is usually at a very young age.

Let’s be clear

I don’t blame tenn for taking 8th grade commits. I blame the system. It needs to change

Just a reminder that this is a discussion and not an argument.

Looking at recruiting classes BEFORE the draft isn’t the way to judge classes. It’s about what kids come to school.

vandy started with David price, then it was WalkerB, then it was rocker and Leiter that were all first round talents out of hs but gambled on themselves. Until Tenn starts doing that you won’t see the same depth.

Draft after draft we see vandy have 4-5 top 2-3 Round draft guys and year after year we see them hold on to at worst half of them. Tennessee has to start holding on to them.

I’ve said it a number of times here that Covid as a blessing in disguise as it allowed Tidwell to come to school. I’m convinced without covid he signs last year

I understand that it’s not an argument, it’s a discussion, but forgive me for feeling like your opinion on all things Tennessee is inherently negative when on most of the boards on VolNation you’re always finding a reason to discount our programs.

Yeah, Tennessee has to find a way to hold on to guys. I agree. If we had kept Mookie Betts, that would have been a program changing commitment. Serrano might still be here. But, success is the first step to getting guys to bypass the minors. TV has been wildly successful considering the relevant talent level we have here, so I imagine that will entice some of the elite HS players to come roll the dice rather than play for a team that is bottom 1/3 in the SEC.

Pre-TV, I would have said 0% chance a guy like Brady House comes to college. Now? He is still likely to go pro but it wouldn’t be completely shocking to think he’d pick TN.

when asked on D1baseball.com about A&M getting Vitello.
Kendall Rogers said.

Not just A&M in general here, but generally speaking, if a big-time job comes open and they want Vitello, it's going to be hard for Tennessee to keep TV. WTS -- Tony loves the culture at UT and maybe he's a different person in that regard, so you never know. My best advice for UT would be to be very aggressive with a contract extension and let the chips fall where they may.

Yep get that buyout $

who is WTS?

Hopefully Tennessee will do what they have to do to keep Coach Vitello

It should already be done, but UT does not have the most proactive administration in the world.

But, I will say this...it’s not going to look good on White if he loses CV because he was sitting on his hands during his first year on the job.

I will reserve final judgement for if TV does leave, but I doubt DW is sitting on his hands. The season is on-going, so I'm sure conversations are being had behind the scenes quite often about preliminary terms for a deal. Smoke will probably start to appear and we'll hear more once the season ends, but right now it's unlikely news will drop while we're fighting to host a Super Regional.

I'm going to stick to my prediction though that DW and Boyd will get it done. With football in constant turmoil, this would be a pretty easy victory to restore some goodwill with the fanbase. I fully expect some news on an extension, new assistant money, and LNS renovations to come sometime in July/August once the season ends.

I hope you’re right. With the recurring football fiasco (as you pointed out), we simply cannot let successful coaches in other sports get away. Doubly so in baseball, where we’ve also spent significant time wandering in the wilderness.

Yep. I'm under no illusion that holding onto TV would be easy. But, as Kendall Rogers said (and I've said this before), TV likes Knoxville. He likes what he has built in a short time here. The entire determinant is just going to be on the shoulders of the administration and if they're willing to make a good faith offer to TV to improve the facilities and the stadium or if we say "Thanks but no thanks." I just can't see that happening. I think we'll make a really strong offer and then it will be up to TV to decide, and I think his decision will be to stay in Knoxville.

DW in no way should be judged negatively if TV leaves. If he is able to keep him he should be judged as a hero.

now the one thing he does need to do is get an extension that gets a nice chunk of change as a buyout. That’s what Kendal Rogers is saying needs to happen

CTV would be crazy to have a big buyout until the improvements he wants actually happen, IMO. By the way, IMO means “in my opinion” 😊

*nods* I agree with your perspective, and also believe that the UT administration will do their part to make an aggressive offer and commitment to the baseball program. It'd be one thing if TV was unhappy here with the administration and community, but that isn't the case. As you said, he likes what he has built and the culture he has established here. As for the programs that will come calling, while they may have the money and facilities, there are also heightened expectations and pressure to win and reach postseason in a short time. That presents another set of factors to take into consideration.

For what it's worth, I listened to an interview with TV for a podcast from last year, and he said that he and has staff had already received offers to go elsewhere but turned them down. The reason? They were having so much fun here working together as a staff. I think that says a lot and is a positive sign for UT.

I am adamantly opposed to “sharing” a stadium. It will always belong to someone else, you will always be a second class citizen in what should be your home stadium.
This. A shared off campus stadium is an absolutely terrible idea.

I just don’t buy that at all. The miss state baseball experience is multigenerational. It’s the thing to do and has been for many years. I don’t think any other program can grab that niche again. This day and age of instant entertainment with technology at push of a button isn’t going to allow for such a tradition to be born imo

Bruin do you work in main stream media?

You literally just took my statement and chopped it in half. No big deal, you could be right but that is the definition of taking something out of context. I would say that the only way to get where STATE is would be to win like STATE wins year in and year out. Also Knoxville has a huge population advantage and with social media these days, I really believe it could be done here.

Well played sir well played!!!

More salary with more buyout. If I was him I’d take it knowing if I was going to leave that type school would pay the buyout anyways and if I stayed I got more $

Again going to Starkville is a passed down from generation to generation event that for many the game is not even the main course of the event

It can’t be duplicated in this day of entertainment

So when you say Knoxville can do that I firmly disagree and winning isn’t going to change that.

In what round was Tidwell projected?

He wasn’t really an elite guy last year. He flashed some 95-96 numbers in the late spring right before the draft but the scouts were shut down at that time. Under normal circumstances I think he’d been a 3-4th round guy that would have gotten a mil or so

We can respectfully disagree. I think modern technology innovations (social media) is a huge advantage for teams in cities like Knoxville. Population along with social media makes it easier to obtain what STATE has in a shorter time frame. Of course the biggest factor is winning like STATE does consistently.
That goes back to recruiting and the whole discussion about how you do that consistently here. Not getting into that again other than to say I believe it is possible. Just look at Legends of Lindsey, about 3-4 weeks ago their following on Twitter was around 200 and now it is over 4,000. By seasons end that could be 20,000.
