Concerning the UF coach search...

Better Hire?

Stoops ducked out of press conference last night and was unavailable to the media.:whistling:

So far it seems like there are alot of fatal flaws with the mentioned candidates. Either something will have to give or UF may be signing a coach that they aren't going to be thrilled about.

Stoops-as originally noted, the guy isn't likely leaving Norman. Money won't be an issue from either side. It just depends on if Foley can pull Stoops and his family.

Peterson-same situation as Stoops without the personal connection with Foley. BSU can't match up with UF but this is a very long distance to ask Peterson to move. However, the whole BSU situation could work in UFs favor (conference falling apart, BSU AD being an ass, etc.). Still a very hard pull.

Kelly, Harbaugh, Gruden, Dungy, Cowher, Carroll-not happening

Strong-under the previously mentioned Meyer tree and a defensive oriented coach. That's 2 huge strikes.

Mullen-Meyer coaching tree and supposedly wants to stay at MSU to make his own name.

Petrino-agreed to a 7 year extension.

Patterson-defensive minded coach and is very content at TCU.

As of right now, things are sketchy at most in this search. Either Foley is going to make a home run hire or he's going to have to loosen up his criteria for this search. I'm wondering if either UF or Miami end up with a guy like Randy Edsall. Is it possible that Michigan fires Rich Rod, Harbaugh takes that job, and UF looks at Rich Rod?

It's a done deal. The new coach has already been picked. It will be announced in the next few days.

Because has hasn't won a BCS bowl since 02. :ermm:

True. However, among all the realistic possible coaching candidates, Bob Stoops is the best. Can that really be debated? He's consistently been at the top in a good conference for years. If I'm a gator fan, I'd take him in a heartbeat.

Who is your top choice?

Oklahoma has routinely won 11 or 12 games per year over the last decade under Stoopsy, and they've been in a BCS bowl in 8 of the last 11 seasons.

That's dominance. Florida would be lucky to get him.

And it makes a ton of sense for Stoops to go. Realistically, what else does he have left to accomplish at Oklahoma?

I was really hoping Florida would grab Petrino or Petersen instead.

I'd be upset if Florida got Stoops. They just had a top 3 coach in the game, they don't need another.

Petersen is a better choice in my opinion. He, unlike Stoops, actually has something to prove. Stoops on the other hand is already atop the coaching world, and the only reason he'd be coming here is to get a pay raise.

That's ridiculous. Stoops isn't done with his career or anything like that. I'm confident in saying he would win at least one national title at Florida.

They won 8 games last season, 7 regular season games, the same as Florida this season really. And he should win big at Oklahoma. There's no reason not to. Same with Texas, USC, Ohio State, etc. He's in a conference dominated by two teams. His own and Texas.

How does it make sense? He's already at a premier program, his team is primed for a National Title run in the coming years, he'll be making $4.75 million next year before incentives, he's building a $3 million dollar home in Norman, he wife has a lucrative position at Mary Kay, etc. What does Florida offer that Oklahoma doesn't?

And lets not even get started on his dismal record in BCS games. Beaten by LSU, Florida, and Boise State; Blown out by West Virginia and USC.

Yes, he's a great coach, but not the right fit for Florida in my opinion.

He's had a hard enough time winning a second NC at Oklahoma, where he's had a much easier path.

Well, I suppose we shall see. Call me a cynic but I don't really buy into these "its a done deal" or "its a lock" posts until its formally announced. If those posts proved accurate, Miami would be led by Gruden right now and UT would have Lovie Smith at the helm. Personally, I'm not worried as a UT fan if Peterson or Stoops is the choice. I'd be more worried about Mullen.

He's gotten there consistently, and just because he comes up short sometimes doesn't mean he always will. He can get better teams together at Florida, too.

A few points.

1. It's a lot harder to get to BCS bowls in the SEC.
2. I don't want to come up short... every season.

I'd be very interested to see what kind of staff Petersen could pull in at UF. I think he'd probably suited best to use his resources (Foley, Urban, etc) to pull in a few high level assistans, specifically ones with solid recruiting experience. However, I feel that he'd rather pull his own staff in and that may or may not work out so well.

Considering all that "easier path" talk, it's a bit odd that you're so enamored with Peteresen.

1. Petersen has 2 BCS Bowls since Stoops won his last. One being earned against a Stoops coached team.

2. Petersen's players are no more talented than their opposition.

Also, I'm confused by one specific part of this story. What is the motive on waiting a few more days if the deal is already done? And, with all of the media and how quickly these stories are broken, I'm pretty sure it would be well known if a deal was already in place. Fact is, I've seen that a deal is done and there will be an announcement in a few days (heard that for a couple days already) and then I've seen that they are just entertaining Petersen's interests in preliminary talks right now.

Now I'm reading that Stoops is finalizing a deal with UF though it could still fall through. New names are popping up for the position, Randy Edsall, Al Golden, Kyle Whittingham, and Will Muschamp all have been added to potential candidates. This is according to ESPN Insiders and GatorCountry.com.

What does all of this tell me? That no one really has any idea of what has or has not happened in this search.
