Confederations Cup U.S -v- Spain

Just me, but I don't think he wrote that he thought the second goal was the keepers fault. That was out and out the defenders screw up. You get rid of the ball in front of the net. No time lolly gag around as he did.

my fault. i guess i didnt read it correctly. just sayin the loss wasnt the keepers fault.

It's funny how keepers get tons of credit in the wins, but the losses are never their fault.

Ya, you're definitely a keeper.

easy to figure out because if a keeper is touching the ball too much his D isn't doing their job :). Keeper just happens to be the last guy in case all else fails.

and yes I was one too

I mainly played defensive back, and noticed how it was always the keeper who did great on D in a win, and the backs' fault in a loss.

Not that we didn't have a good keeper.

I think the back is the most under appreciated position in the game. They can be solely responsible for a win or a loss. If they do their job correctly then a keeper shouldn't have to touch a ball. if they don't then a game can be lost.

That's true in a sterilized theoretical sense. But in reality sometimes a back is better off applying pressure or allowing for a weak pass/ball movement that a keeper can collect, then trying to hard to stay between his man and the goal that he allows the ball to be kicked back a bit and give up a longer but clean shot.

I guess I am just saying, good backs should prevent a solid close shot on goal, sure. But to do that, you sometimes will force weak movements by the offense for the goalie to collect/clear.

And in my experience, goalies get annoyed if they don't get to ever touch the ball in a game. Sometimes, they want you to pass it back and let them clear it.

we don't get annoyed we get bored. Only so many times you can take a drink, wet your gloves and mark the box.

keepers getting the blame/glory really reminds me of how qb's get the treatment.

hes supposed to be the best football in the WORLD. If you that guy you don't lose concentration, especially on an internatonal stage.
I dont care if he sat on his ass for 94 minutes, when he needs to make an important save he makes it. Casillas didn't, therefore didnt live upto his billing, and is fair game in the blame game for this lose. Sure Spain didnt score, but if he oesn't let that piss easy save in they have a better chance of winning game end of. As for the 2nd game, while it was the defenders fault his positioning wasn't great either.

Poor performance in key situation at the end of the day.

that arguement would be relelvant if he conceeded the goal in the 90th minute after Spain had spent 99% of the game in the USA's half. however it came in the 27th minute. And the bets keeper in the world is paid not to make that sort of error, and it was a really bad one at that

I think they are just saying it's reasonable to expect your offense to come up with a point or two.

But I agree, the keeper made some silly errors, that were the difference between the two teams. Howard played lights-out.

Spain , U.S.A

Shots (on goal) 11 (6) , 4 (2)
Corners 9 , 3
Possession 56% , 44%

They had three times as many shots and corners as we had and couldn't score. The best forward in the world isn't paid to miss shots...

The best keeper in the world also isnt paid to let in a shot that is essentially straight at him.
Scoring against one of the best goal keepers in the world is alot harder than that, and letting in that goal still changes the whole complex of the game...when your defending a 1-0 lead you play alot differently than when its 0-0, regardless of how many shots they had it is flat out harder to score.

That goal just now was a great example of how it can be the back's fault. There's no way Mphela should be able to roam in unmarked like that.

Ultimately, Casillas has to take the blame on that one, but I think his vision was blocked. If he'd seen it, it would have been a fairly routine save..
