Troy had a guy the same size of Xerxes in it. Troy also had Agememnon dying in Troy which is completely fictional. As well as some pretty blatant time misrepresentations. Just saying, Troy is a movie trying to be historically accurate (and obviously entertaining since its a movie) and fails while 300 is a movie that is trying to be entertaining and succeeds (well to some anyway). What's your argument? You don't like movies with 30' tall black Persian wizards?
I doubt The Illiad is historically accurate, and while the movie might have filled in some of the gaps the poem omitted--I would really have to go back and reread my Homer to be sure--I didn't have any problem suspending disbelief to a point where I couldn't enjoy the movie. 300 was different in that monsters and giants and wizards, oh my! took over the movie to the point where a really good story from history got lost in what turned into a final battle scene from Mortal Kombat: Thermopylae.
And maybe I wasn't clear about Xerxes. I did not like his depiction in the movie because the Persian leader,as far as I know, wasn't 30 feet tall. Or a wizard. Or black.
EDIT: Which guy in Troy was so big he had to be carried around on a stairway?

Tarzan
Chicago
Start by reading Gates of Fire and follow that up by reading The Histories. At that point, you will understand exactly what a crock 300 is.I can't understand people not liking 300. If you see it as what it was meant to be, a purely entertaining violence gorefest, then it was amazing. If you went in looking for historical accuracy or any sort of intriguing story, well that was a mistake. It is more historically accurate than Troy oddly enough. If you're one of those people that have some strange grudge against bluescreens than I guess you wouldn't like it. But, I've never understood that.

I am still waiting for Ridley Scott to make a movie using those two sources as his base.
