Actually it’s come out that Durham was already investigating in 2017 while Sessions was still AG. The timeline is in one of the Herriage tweet posts a ways back.

This has dragged out so long, the investigators are backed into a corner. If they proceed, the screeching about all the stuff the last administration (which included Biden) did is going to become not about their wrongdoing but about using the allegations to "steal" an election. It's dead unless Trump wins, or perhaps he uses Nov and Dec for scorched earth in Jan - that could be fun. The only people who could really run with it are the press and there's not a chance in hell of that happening. Leaks could keep it simmering, but the press are going to run interference for the dems as usual and play whack-a-mole with the sources.
