Cost of the sec network

maybe i should wait before doing a switch from DTV to DISH. Am all set to do that this summer when DISH again comes to my door with their deep discount offer to switch to them. I interested because I'd save a bunch of dough. But the package I have with DTV from a few years ago, is equal to the high end packages they sell today. Must decide if I stay put with what I have which is a lot of not offered by either cable company except in their most expensive packages now. Based on my channel surfing, I suspect I also have stuff I wasn't supposed to have. Looking at the old guides and manuals showed greyed out channels not available in my package and yet seeing them when I surf is reason I think the cable guy or someone made a mistake.

What is going to hurt is when you have to hear how great Bama is on the Bama Network, I mean SEC network

All the SEC network is going to do is help bama recruit better than they are now, like they need help.:banghead2:I hate PAUL.:rtfm:

That's about right, yes.

ESPN is asking cable and satellite companies for $1.20 per subscriber per month inside the SEC footprint, meaning states that contain an SEC school. Inside the footprint, it will have to be part of the average level of service and can't be on a "Sports Tier."

Outside the SEC footprint, ESPN is asking for about $0.25 per subscriber per month and it can be on a "Sports Tier."

So if your cable company carries the network, that $1.20 will probably be factored into your next rate increase.

The SEC Network cannot be purchased separately, just like you can't buy ESPN separately. This is not something that is going to hit anybody very hard in the pocketbook.

Then whats the hold up ?

It sucks that "Ma Bell" (att) was one of the first on board with SEC Network......they will set the bar for others as far as pricing. After many years of seeing my parents rent phones from Bell/att....and not having a choice...and piss pour customer service, I decided in my early 20's not to ever give them another dime. Sure ATT is better know that there is competition, but I won't ever deal with them again. F*** u-verse, give me a radio

This is me right here. But with AT&T buying them would that not all but guarantee the sec network? Uverse has a deal already which is AT&T.

If not, I'm giving them till the middle of July then changing companies.

I spoke with an ATT sales rep today about the SEC Network. He said that it will automatically become part of the Sports Package within the UVerse 300-level bundle, effective August 4th at no additional charge.

Still don't understand why there is isn't the political will to end this silly law that mandates that you must buy packages from whatever cable provider you're subscribed to instead of paying a monthly fee per channel. I mean, itunes has made it possible to purchase individual songs instead of entire albums, right? So why can't the cable TV industry do the same? It would save the consumer a ton of money and would end the ridiculous subsidizing of garbage channels like MTV etc.

Most of the problem has nothing to do with your tv provider. Companies like Disney own espn, abc, Disney channel and a bunch of channels nobody watches. They sell them as a package to the tv provider. If the cable company wants espn then they have to pay for all of the channels up front so we end up getting them thrown in to a package also.

I think all the cable companies "plan" to carry it, but getting a deal done is the issue that is there.

For carriers like Dish, whose carriage agreement with ESPN was up, they rolled the SEC Network into an overall extension to carry all of ESPN's channels.

It's more complicated for carriers that are at the beginning or the middle of deals with ESPN.

Comcast re-upped a couple of years ago, but that deal included some framework for adding a future SEC Network. I think that deal gets done shortly, partly to avoid looking bad while going through a merger with Time Warner Cable. TWC is near the end of their deal with ESPN, so I think Comcast will look to re-do their whole deal to get this done for their current and future customers.

Direct TV was ready for a big fight, but now they're merging with ATT, who was the first provider to sign on with the network, so that will likely work itself out, especially if that merger closes sooner rather than later.

As far as Charter, they are HEAVY in Alabama, especially around Birmingham, Tuscaloosa and Auburn. I think you can count on that deal getting done, because I think we all know the kinds of things Alabama fans do to things and people that interfere with their ability to watch Tide games. If they don't have the network by the opening weekend, you'll see riots down there.

The biggest thing that is holding up these deals is the Longhorn Network. It's no secret in the industry that ESPN is forcing cable companies to add LHN when they add the SEC Network. Most carriers are fully on board with the full asking price for the SEC Network, but they're arguing pennies over having to carry LHN, which has zero interest outside of Texas.

DP - any news about Cox Cable carrying it?

Like I said, every carrier is negotiating with ESPN to carry it. I don't have specific information on each one. As I understand it, Cox is heavy in LSU and Arkansas territory, so there will be plenty of pressure on them.

Thanks (they're in Florida and I think in Georgia and Missouri as well) :hi:

Some companies do like those terms, both the amounts and on what levels of service the channel can be offered.

Also a factor is the Longhorn Network issue I mentioned earlier.

I must have missed the LN post - whats does it have to do with the SEC N ?

Maybe this will get SEC network deal done for Direc.

DALLAS — AT&T Inc. on Sunday agreed to buy DirecTV for $48.5 billion, or $95 per share, a move that gives telecommunications company a larger base of video subscribers and increases its ability to compete against Comcast and Time Warner Cable, which agreed to a merger in February.

I know uverse has a deal. I'm just hoping with AT&T buying direct it's automatic for direct customers. I really don't want to switch but I will. Uverse isn't available in my area and I don't want to give cox my money. Bad enough I have to have Internet through them.

Thanks though for the info.

They'll be operated as separate companies for a least a year while this gets regulatory approval.

Merger has no bearing on whether DTV customers have the SEC Network this fall.

Yep, its like having every game on pay-per-view

Well, at least for now we will get to see some of the games on CBS and ESPN. That is until the SEC Network gets full rights to all SEC games and then you will be forced to purchase it to see the games

Yep. Just like they did many years ago with boxing. $$$ will chase many away from following the sport. That's not good for the game and SEC in the long rum IMO.

Did you know the current head of the FCC is a former cable company lobbyist? It's pretty self explanatory. As long as corporate executives are rich enough to pay off those in charge and laws are pushed aside, MTV and other garbage channels will continue to be shoved down our throats. Furtunately, services that could potentially do away with this practice are on the horizon, if they aren't smothered from the start by larger businesses.

This x 100!!!!
