Cost of the sec network

My guess is that the cables and DTV will negotiate a last minute deal in which they are allowed to put the SEC network into some kind of tier package, like a sports package, but even if they fail to do so, they will pass along the surcharge of 1.40 per customer to everyone via a rate hike. They will not swallow that cost without passing it along. Dish took a bold stance early to try and convert subscribers, but even they will find a way after year one to pass that fee onto their customer base. They like all companies report to the shareholders who expect increased profits. ESPN will play hardball, but TWC, DTV and others have shown the resolve to stand up to those tactics in the past. Bottom line, it will cost more to watch the SEC network, it will not be free, it simply cannot be in any reasonable business model. These companies are set up to make profits.

Ask yourself this question, why would you be able to see a brand new premium channel for no cost? Look at the history of these conference channels like the B10 and PAC12 networks, nobody watches them for free. It would be like getting HBO for free. The providers love to bundle or package these premium channels into packages, but those packages carry a cost.

Rooster,

Please stop making assumptions, Dish had leverage over over Disney, the parent company of ESPN and AbC. That's why they came to an agreement and Dish can offer the SEC Network as part of a basic package to everyone nationwide. Please read the following link.

Did you really just compare HBO and the PAC 12 Network? You think those are comparable as premium channels?

I stayed with Comcast for phone and internet. I told them I was disconnecting because they did not offer the SEC Network, they said OK and cut my internet and phone almost in half to stay with them. They have the best internet going in my area, IMO.

Does the half priced rate they gave you expire at any point? Or is it good for the length of service? When I spoke with Comcast, they told me that if I cancelled my cable tv, then my internet cost would increase from $35 per month to $65 per month. This is because they provide a discount for bundles.

It's not hard to foresee many people leaving any cable provider that doesn't include the SEC network. I know I will for one channel. Especially the one that matters the most.

This is the very reason I never bundle. It just gives a business an iron grip on your neck. If you do something they don't like they choke you to death.

My Internet and TV service is separate, got both for deep discounts at the time.

A word about online services like web hosting. When I opt to discontinue service, I tell my card company a few months ahead to discontinue my card and issue me a new one. WHY!? Because I've had the experience of informing Startlogic and WebHosting a few years ago that I was discontinuing. In both cases, they charged my card for another year of service while discontinuing as requested. In other words pre-charging me and claiming it was to pay for the year I had just concluded. That wasn't even a good lie. I showed them even with their own online records that fee was paid for the year previous. And you have to pay or the website is taken down by the deadline. They wouldn't refund the charge.

Thenceforth, I kept service separate and for certain ones, discontinued my card for a new card to prevent this predatory behavior for others. Even then some businesses tried to get me to tell them my new card number so they could charge it despite termination of our relationship. The greed and dishonestly is strong in them.

One more rant. You will also see sooner or later that some businesses including auto dealer service offices seek to have you fill out surveys before you receive your order or in the case of your car, before you even get your key back. Will the car even start after you turn the key? You don't know but they want you to do their computerized rating survey now, Now, NOw, NOW. In one case, they wouldn't give my key (I never give my keychain, just a solo key) though I had just paid the bill. because I hadn't done the survey. I took my driving key, went to the car and left then filed a BBB claim along with their not having returned my key.
Also advised the police. I got it back and they won't ever see me at their facility again. So refuse to do a survey until you actually know you got what you paid for.

If they dont raise the rates for this reason, they would find some other reason. My subscription goes up by some incremental amount every year. Adding an additional 1.40 a month would be perfectly acceptable given that in the past I had no way to watch all the UT games and now I will have that ability for almost no money at all.

And every major carrier will eventually have the SEC network as a part of one of it's tier packages. It may not be by the beginning of the season, but it will happen. There is simply too much demand for it in the south. DTV and Comcast would not just hand over that business to Dish just because of the SEC network. They will get it done and it will not cost that much.

I just hope it doesn't drag out too long with DTV. There must not be much demand for the Pac 12 network I don't think DTV has reached a deal with them yet.

I really like DirecTV, especially compared to the alternatives I have (ATT, Comcast and Dish). I dont think I would ever give up DirecTV, even for the SEC network, because those other service providers are simply awful.

what I hope happens in the future is that the SEC network provides online streaming subscriptions for a low monthly fee that I can pay for the 4 months of football season. Then I dont have to worry if DirecTV ever carries the SEC network.

The articles below which I link will reference $1.30 per subscriber in the SEC footprint, though I believe ESPN/SEC is starting at $1.40. As a comparison, the B10 charges $1.00 per in its foorprint.

Where I live there is 3 choices Comcast, DTV or Dish. Comcast cable is too expensive and Dish is awful imo. I don't think I would switch for one channel either.

No, it doesn't expire, and I get a bundled rate for phone and internet. If you call to disconnect your service, suddenly their rates become a lot better in my experience.

Google fiber has agreed to carry the SEC Network. I will be honest I've never heard of Google fiber until just now.

That isn't going to happen, it's just not ESPN's business model.

With the sec network will there be anymore football and basketball games on ppv or is the network taking the games that would be on ppv in years past? No more ppv games would be good.

Just spoke with Comcast in Nashville and the young lady told me it's in her computer that they will be providing the SEC network to their subscribers. Pricing is not available yet. Just glad to know the will have it.

Two years ago, i switched from Direct to Dish and could not b happier. Dish has better equipment, better service, better packages and cost less. Dish is rated the better than Direct in National surveys.

my local cable company announced today that they would be carrying the SEC Network:dance2:

DirecTV is the bomb. If I wasn't so fed up with the ridiculous monthly payment increases, I'd stick with them. But I'm cutting the cable for sure now. Got my Mohu Sky 60 amplified antenna, ROKU, Zoom 5341J modem, Netgear Nighthawk dual band router, and TWC will be installing the Extreme Internet package next week. Will be doing all my configuration myself. As fro Vols game, I remain convinced I will find a way to stream them, SEC Network notwithstanding. If not and I can't go to Knoxville, there's always the bowling alley, Buffal wings, and even O'Charley's here. But no matter, the cable is being cut by 2nd-3rd week of June.
