Could a 5-7 UT still make a bowl?

I am not sure which is worse, doing back flips over a rousing victory against KY or hoping to back into the Masengil Weedeater Bowl in Shreveport on a technicality.

Standards aren't what they used to be for the Volunteers.

I hope not. The Bowl system is watered down enough already. I think you should have to have a minimum 7 wins. 500 teams really don't deserve a bowl.

There are too may bowls. A bowl game should be a reward for a good season. 6-6 is not a good season. I personally think the number of bowls should be reduced and only invite teams with 8+ wins.

For some teams 6-6 may be a good season considering the conference they're in and their circumstances.

It's all about the money.

They are discussing this on the EA show right now. According to them, we will go bowling if Auburn wins the SEC and Michigan St beats Ohio St. TIFWIW

I believe ainge is incorrect. There are more than enough bowl eligible teams, therefore one of them would take the last SEC tie in game over Tennessee

I could care less about a bowl game honestly but the extra practices would be nice for this team.

You would think all teams would get those extra practices especially since the worst teams need them the most.

What makes you so sure? Is there a written rule or just your opinion? You may be right, but considering the strength of our schedule and the fact that the SEC has agreements with the bowls, UT could get in over non SEC 6-6 teams in the SEC bowls.

Completely incorrect. The conference tie-in gets negated if there aren't enough 6-6 or better teams from the conference in question, but there are eligible at-large teams.

A 5-7 team cannot get chosen over a 6-6 team, regardless of the bowl's conference tie-in.

Its going to take more than a South Carolina win to convince anybody of letting this Vol team near a Bowl of any kind. Focus should be on securing the recruiting class and spring.

Dumb.

You're an advocate for fairness in the bowl system, yet the teams who are selected for bowls get WAY MORE opportunity to practice and refine their craft compared to a team who doesn't get to a bowl game.

Bowl games are not rewards. They're profitable ventures for sponsors... and WE THE U of T are a profitable product.

They'd take a gamble on a 5-7 UT team over anybody any day of the week if a technicality allowed it.

NCAA's new bowl game tiebreakers include FCS wins, 5-7 teams - ESPN

1.A 6-6 team with a victory against an FCS school.
2.A 6-6 team with two wins against FCS schools.
3.A 6-7 team that loses its conference championship game
4.A 6-7 team that played a 13-game schedule such as Hawaii and any school that travels to Hawaii to play a game.
5.FCS teams making the move to FBS if they finish with a record of at least 6-6.
6.A 5-7 team if that team finishes with a top-five APR score.

Does this mean these are the tiebreakers for the ninth SEC bowl tie-in, or that these are the tiebreakers for all of the FBS? If the former, then we could be going bowling. If the latter, then we're out of luck.

We'll submit that one to the bowl reduction oversight committee right quick, just as soon as they come out of the cash counting room

Guys I think this is gaining some momentum. I'm starting to hear from a few different places that this is a good possibility.

Finally, 5-7 teams that have a top-5 Academic Progress Rate (APR) score. This was later adjusted to allow other 5-7 teams to be selected thereafter—in order of their APR. [11]

UT doesn't have one of the top 5 APR scores. That number that was reported a month or so ago was an interim number, not the actual number for the entire year.

Since UT is the only 5 and 7 team, however, seems like the later adjustment to the rule allows UT to be potentially eligible.
