Country music thread

I just spent an interesting afternoon in a three plus hour jam session with two local legends, The Vanover Sisters. I doubt anyone knows them outside the area that is not over 60 yrs old. They were on the local WOPI & WCYB radio programs as teenagers with Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs, Earnie Ford, The Carter Family, Doc Watson, Leon Kiser and many other early Mountain music players. They blew me away as these two ladies of 70-80 wailed away with some of their signature songs like "Here Comes Trouble" & "Older men make better Lovers"

Just so you know, Bristol is the acknowledged birthpalce of Country Music by the Congress of the USA. The first recordings of the genre were made here of Jimmy Rogers, The Carter Family and the Stonemans among others by Ralph Pearman of the RCA Recording Co of New York.

There is a group of us that meet every Mon. at Java Js in Bristol at 7:00 pm. We are trying to keep the old traditional Mtn music alive. Come join us if you can.

i got to play guitar with Roy Acuff Jr years ago. i sucked of course and just followed along, but definately appreciated the expericence.

Thanks. It's not my kind of music, but the message is cool. It is very familiar, have a daughter that just got married in July.

haha, yeah.. it's a pretty good song, and i like the way he delivers that message.. pretty funny actually.

I've liked every Rodney Atkins song he's came out with....

Except cleaning this gun. I actually despise it. Just think it's stupid.

He has a song that to my knowledge hasn't been released called "About the South". It's classic and a must hear.

I got his CD when it first came out. Its good, but I didn't really care for that one song, cleaning this gun. It's ok but there are alot better songs on his CD than that one.

Unfortunately, I can't stand Rodney Atkins. He has single handedly almost destroyed my love for country music. But I don't blame him, I blame radio.

WUSY-101 out of Cleveland/Chattanooga, Tennessee plays his songs constantly. I didn't mind him to begin with, but every time I hear one of his songs come on now, I turn the station immediately. Just this morning when my alarm clock radio went off, I heard Cleaning my gun. I hit my snooze button (which lasts nine minutes) and when it went off again the I've been watching you song came on! I kid you not! In the span of less than ten minutes they played two different songs by the same person. Ridiculous! You know their are other singers out there.

haha, i rarely hear it on xm, so i'm still a fan.

XM 'pop' stations play the same 10 or so songs 39489384983 times

AMEN to that!

I'll third that!!

you evidently have a completely different version of XM than I listen to. Channels 11, 16 and that Nashville station play it all the freaking time when I'm listening.

do you like Sirius?

I'm sold on XM solely for baseball in the summer. Listening to Vin Scully call a game is worth 12 bucks a month even for the 5-6 months the Dodgers aren't playing. And I hate the Dodgers.

They also have 3 really good stand up comedy stations that I'm hooked on. Never even tried Sirius.

I love it. Tons of bball and football games are on it, both college and pro. Several good comedy stations and they have Howard Stern and Bubba the love sponge. I do wish they had baseball coverage but I get to see a lot of reds games on TV and you can find streaming audio over the internet so it's not really that big of a deal for me.

The hills of Roane County - Carter Brothers

In the beautiful hills, way back in Roane Country

There's where I roamed for many long years

There's where my heart's been tending most ever

That's where the first step of misfortune I made

I was about thirty years when I courted and married

Amanda Gilbraith I then called my wife

But her brother stabbed me for some unknown reason

Just three months later I'd taken Tom's life

For twenty five years this whole world I rambled

I went to old England to France and to Spain

But I thought of my home way back in Roan Country

I boarded a steamer and came back again

I was captured and tried in the village of Kingston

Not a man in the county would speak one kind word

When the jury came in with the verdict next morning

A lifetime in prison was the words that I heard

When the train pulled out poor mother stood weepin

And sister she sat alone with a sigh

And the last words I heard was Willie God bless you

Was Willie God bless you, God bless you, good bye

Sweet Martha was grave but Corey was better

There's better and worse, although you can see

Boys when you write home from the prison in Nashville

Place one of my songs in your letter for me

I think that is right, I've got a song book of old traditional songs of this area, and I've found that there are some errors in it. Seems like more than one version of a song gets passed along. I am in a group that meets & jams every Monday to keep these old songs alive.

Do you like Pat Greens "College" he did with Brad Paisley?

Not a bad song, but Pat has really crapped out since he went to Nashville. Nothing of the quality of "Georges Bar", "Adios Days", or "Dancehall Dreamer" on the newer stuff.. the "Georges Bar" CD, i could listen to on repeat all day and never get sick of it..

His buddies Cory Morrow and Dub Miller keep me entertained alot these days
