I would also like to vent on the argument that Tosu was in complete control of that game. Tosu went up 11 with 5:38 left in the game. Michigan responded with a TD and a 2 point conversion with 2:16 left. Tosu was not in control of that game until they recovered the onside kick!
Now, even if Tosu was actually 11 points better than Michigan, does that make Michigan's resume less impressive than Arkansas? 50-14 at the hands of USC. Florida? 27-17 at the hands of Auburn. USC? 33-31 loss to Oregon State. Do I even have to illustrate why Michigan is better than ND this season?
Sorry, I just don't believe that any team that loses by 36 points (I could care less what month the loss was in) can ever claim they are the best team in the country. Florida lost what was a close game with Auburn, however, Auburn has gone on to prove they really aren't that great. And, USC was in control of their destiny until they slipped up against Oregon State. Oregon frikkin State! Does anybody in here seriously want the Beaver faithful running around telling the nation that they beat the National Champs???
no... and they don't deserve it. they're good. but anybody not drinking the SEC kool-aid would've seen how good USC was last night.. i know it was against Cal, but they are a good football team and deserve their shot if they win out
A playoff? How many teams exactly? Right now there are 2 undefeated teams, 9 one loss teams, and 11 two loss teams. So, you are going to actually resolve controversy with a playoff??? I doubt it. A playoff system will still rely on subjective selection of teams, seeds, and pairings.
This is the stupid point that people try to make for avoiding the playoff system (ADs and conference chiefs argue that the process would be too hard on the "student"-athletes), but it couldn't be more wrong. If the debate about who gets in is centered around the team that took the 16th spot (a la the 64th spot in the basketball tourney), then the best teams would be represented in tourney and those on the fringes (4th seeds) could debate forever, but we wouldn't be likely to debate "The Best Team." We rarely hear debates about the best NFL team, but often the best team there goes home without the trophy (as will be the case in any sport dictated by turnovers/mistakes dominating outcomes on any given day with fairly evenly matched teams).
