Culinary, Arts, Thread.

As soon as I saw that, I heard it in my mind. “That’s a spicy meatball!” in a over the top Italian dialect. Love it.
My original set of in-laws were (are) Italian, and the backyard Fourth of July in Paramus NJ back in the 80’s with the 120 family members who could make it is forever seated in my brain. Loud, enthusiastic, loud, excitable, loud, loving, and loud. Proud to have been on board for the not-quite-30 years.

Coming from an irredeemably WASP family with a total of 8 relatives (parents, maternal grandmother, uncle, aunt, three cousins), it was a wonderful experience of how families might be.

I was in the mix with the only hubby’s family, German with them also. It was wonderful and a learning experience also. Family members came out of the woodwork during gatherings. One of the best things that came out of that time.

I hear that. They can keep DXH, but this family was a great group of folks. I wish I’d grown up in a passionate family like theirs.

DXH’s stepfather - this does get complicated - was one of 12 kids, all of whom except one bred like rabbits. Their dad sold bread from a horse-drawn wagon every morning. All 12 grew up to be professionals or married to and were productive members of their communities. One 2nd generation member (a cousin?) coached USA Olympic gymnastics. All 1st and 2nd generation descendants from dirt-poor Sicilian immigrants.

That sounds like a movie, I can just see them all eating and talking loud and laughing and having the best of times.........

I only wish I had memories like that on either side. Dad never shared much about his family history, still doesn’t besides showing a occasional picture of his family I don’t know, and ex hubby’s, mostly was talked about ancestors in Serbia. My maiden name is Shaffer, it changed when my ancestors came here.

It’s funny, how some cultures are so reticent, and others are so open.
