Sometimes if I look really hard I can imagine how the smaller round plate with three sections might sorta look upside down, but that’s about it. Is it the key to the illusion?

Ok, maybe this helps? The light source comes from the right, about 3 o’clock position. (Don’t know if that will reverse the shadows for you.)

I have your problem when I look at Google satellite map images of southern Utah. The ridges become ravines, and the ravines become ridges, and there’s not a thing I can do about it, other than look at the topo map.

For about 3 milliseconds the bottom pic looked like a ravine… maybe because I read your caption first?

The top one looks like ridges and the bottom one looks like a dried up lake bed.
