Cuonzo receives raise

I love winning too, but that isn't what sports are all about.

I feel the same as yourself, but the reality is in big time D1 athletics where the coaches are making $millions per year to coach winning produces revenue. The business model doesn't work without the winning. The guy running the local rec center probably makes $25K annual and has a chance to make a difference in more lives than a D1 Bball coach who has 12 guys under his direction. Pay CCM $25K annually and then what he does for the players will be what he is judged on. At $1.3 million he's judged on winning / filling the arena / revenue.

With Dooley, it was all about dollars and cents. Same with Martin. Tennessee couldnt afford to pay buyouts for Fulmer, Dooley, and a new coach's salary, if they planned to pay the new coach anything. The AD is in a financial pit right now, and I have no doubt they will let the basketball team suffer a year under a lame duck coach to save money on his buyout, especially if they allowed the football team to.

You may be right and this is exactly what the AD is thinking.

I contend the difference in revenue generated in winning seasons vs losing seasons in Fball and Bball programs the size of TN more than offset any coaching buyout. D1 athletics has become huge business. A couple of $million to get rid of an unsuccessful coach is just a drop in the bucket.

I'd guess Alabama is happy to pay Saban every penny he gets if they compare their balance sheet now with before he came.

Definitely true, but hypothetically if Hart got rid of CCM after this year, he had better be absolutely sure he's hiring a guy that can come in and win immediately. A splashy hire that would generate a lot of renewed interest wouldn't be cheap either, so you have to factor in the buyout of the entire current staff, and the difference in cost to hire a big name. Drop that kind of money and don't get it back in immediate ticket sales when the new guy takes a couple years to adjust, and our financial situation goes from bad to worse.

True, but then the presumption is that the next coach will be successful, and pretty immediately. That's not always the case. Bama paid several coaches big money, and got mediocre results for several years prior to Saban.

***Edit: Pretty much what jjay2518 said above.

I agree 100%. My assumption is if your willing to pay the $3 million + for a proven top notch coach then the odds of success are greatly increased. Roll the dice and buy another unproven $1.3 mil coach and then you're hoping for the best.

All the $3 million guys were unproven at one time so maybe CCM will prove to be one of those.

I thought the smiley face gave it away, but I was kddin guy. Lighten up tomorrow is Friday. :)

Don't ever think I take myself or this forum too seriously lol......I am excited about the possible surprise football commitment on Friday.

BTO, I agree with you mostly, but I also believe BOP has some valid points also. Plus, all "H" breaks loose when he shows up, which is fun......IMO.

I personally like debating with someone intelligent when I feel like they are receptive to the notion their point of view could be wrong, and they are open to a change of mind.

I don't get that feeling with BOP. Not sure if he's just that thick-skulled or if he's trolling. Part of me thinks there's no way he really believes some of the stuff he says.

I would say a top 20 class would be pretty good don't you think?

Nut unless it has some elite talent in it. You can't build a great basketball program with these pieces unless you are a great coach. A top 20 class for Counzo that features no top 50 talent will not earn him NCAA trips. He's not a good enough coach.

You're speaking about 2 different things completely. If he has a nice run this year then obviously he's a pretty decent coach. He will still have 5* Robert Hubbs on his team next year so not sure what you're talking about. There's alot of teams in the SEC who would love to have a roster built of kids ranked 50-150.

“@BFQuinn: Spoke with Cuonzo Martin re. his $50K pay raise. He said UT AD Dave Hart initiated a meeting in early June and presented the offer.”

"@BFQuinn: "It was something they presented and I really appreciated it. I’m happy about it and it was a kind gesture by Dave (Hart)." - Cuonzo Martin”

It is frustrating as a fan when a team doesn't do as well as we want them to, or think they should. But lets look at the shape of our progam before BP. And lets try to keep our standards closer to that era rather than the last 6 years.

Bruce Pearl raised the expectations to the level they should always be for this program. The program was mediocre for most of 20 years before Pearl.

Since his best recruiting class is around 7th in the SEC......wouldn't almost half or better have as much or better talent than us?

1. Many other schools have had alot more attrition.

2. If we were ranked 7 and 8, and someone else goes 6&13, we would likely have the more talent.

3. Compare our roster to the rest of the SEC, it's top 3 in talent.

:hi:

For 1 year, then it may not be top 10.

Really, you wanna play that game?

Ok...take off Barton, McRae, Edwards and Maymon since they're the only graduates.

That leaves you: Thompson, Hubbs, Richardson, Stokes, Ndiaye, Davis, Q, Reese, Moore, Cornish and Cofer.

That's 2 five stars, and 4 three stars who were ranked in the top 150. Tell me how many other teams in the SEC have a more talented roster than that next year? It's not 10 I can promise you that...

Ill wait, although I'm pretty confident you won't do the research because you know you're dead wrong.
