Cutcliffe's record at Duke makes

So what are you saying? You would give Cut 6 years at Tennessee to turn it around but only give Coach Jones 2 years?

Didn't say squat about giving anyone six years.

It was ignored by the cheerleading section that a losing record coming into the job might indicate Dooley was a bad hire. But no, it took three to finally toss in the towel.

When you have no metrics for performance, you can expect bad performance. If next year mirrors this, we've nothing to indicate CBJ is the man.

I'm not sure what point some of you are trying to make. Obviously we all would have rather had "pull a name out of a hat" as our coach over Kiffin/Dooley but whats done is done. Cutcliffe has done a nice job with one winning record in six years at Duke but he's never going to be the head coach at the University of Tennessee.

I would take James Franklin over Cutcliffe. Debate that................

**This isn't directed towards you Sandvol**

It's not as though anyone's clamoring for Cut, just acknowledging his accomplishment and wondering aloud if he'd been here. Take a pill.

He did not want to coach here since he and Fulmer were good friends. I wish we could get past some of this Cutcliffe,Gruden, etc. stuff. Sounds desperate.BJ is on the right track.

This question is slightly off topic, but related to coaching choices. It appears that at the end of this season, Ed Orgeron will be available. Would Vol fans be happy to see him hired as an assistant for his recruiting prowess, or do we still lump him in with Kiffin as eternal personae non grata (based on his attempts to "steal away" recruits when he left UT for USCw)?

To me Orgeron is worse than Kiffin. Kiffin did skip town, but he wasn't the one calling our recruits and telling them not to go to class and wanted them to follow.

I feel like there is a place in Knoxville for Orgeron. I'm not sure exactly where it is but It's probably somewhere in the Tennessee river. :whistling:

jk.. I hope USC keeps him.

It's not exactly hard to win with a Manning at QB. Remind me how he did at Ole Miss after Eli left.

Do you really think Duke could win 8+ games in the SEC? If we traded schedules with them, we would be 8-2 and they would be 3-7.

He's done a good job at Duke, considering it's Duke. But let's try not to give more credit than is due.

he was chosen by Archie to coach his sons ...as I recall they did not come out of the gates as Superbowl champs . As PM recovered from his neck injury ...he went back to Cutt.

I think he also won with a guy named Tee and a guy named Ainge . Ainge was a train wreck until Cutt arrived ...and then he was a 9 and 10 win QB.

I can tell you that the team fell to 5 wins. Coach Cutt came back and we won 9 games and then 10. He left ...and we have not won 9 games since. Many would tell you that he was the de facto head coach at UT with Chief being a single minded D coach and Fulmer doing the delegation of duties.

You mean coaches can make less talented players play over their heads? You mean coaches can have players show improvement over the course of a season? Nonsense! Besides just like auburn, and mizzu, and ole miss, everyone knew duke was gonna be good this year. On the other hand we knew we were going 5-7 this year, so why expect anything better.

I certainly think CBJ is the answer, do not get me wrong. ... But, Cut was a much better choice than Kiff or Dools at the time and this is not hindsight - this is how I felt at the time.
As far as Eli making Cut successful at Ole Miss - that is probably just as true the other way around. There have been a long line of QBs that were successful under Cut.

Players make coaches. I don't care who you are. Even coaches will tell you that.

I also think Cutcliffe has never been known as a recruiter and that is of concern. It is funny that that a BS artist like Orgeron is considered a great recruiter and down to earth straight-shooter Cutcliffe is not.

Not sure about all around recruiter ...but the amount of offensive talent he recruited and developed into NFL talent is amazing during his two stints at UT .

I think some may be confusing Cut (who is a better recruiter than many here give credit) with Chavis.

From the earl-mid 90's through to 1999 the talent Tennessee signed was spearheaded by Fulmer, Cut and Garner.

If he had replaced Fulmer as HC and made the right hire at DC this team would have quickly rebounded from '08's 5-7 record, IMO. Would we have competed for Division, SEC and NC championships? No one can say either way. Certainly cannot compare his achievements at Ole Miss or Duke to what may have been here. We know that his offenses are capable of putting a lot of pts on the board, he develops talent, and again if he makes the right hire at DC who knows.
