Still way to early to say anything about any of these guys period.

What are you gonna say if they have huge Senior years and have film come out that is just unreal?

Star talk is crap but to do it 8 months before signing day is just pointless.

Dear lord people. Are you blind? I said it's okay to have a couple 3*'s and I know it's early and rankings can change. I will gladly take the guys now or after(if they do)they rank up. I just don't want to end this class with 3 4*'s and 17 2 and 3 *'s.

Can we all agree that the higher they are rated, then the more likely they are to be a successful football player?

I'd say that the percentages are in your favor but only slightly. Too many kids get looked over in their junior seasons and a lot of kids have growth spurts or get hurt which makes it very difficult to project players. I will agree that you have a somewhat better chance of winning if your team's average star ranking is high. I think it is very similar to the ratios in the pros. 5 star recruits are like 1st round draft picks. They usually have the biggest upside and potential but a good percentage of them bust.

So why even bring it up?

You said it's early and that the rankings can change. So to me it doesn't make sense as to why you bring it up.

Out of 55 from these classes, only 25 have made some type of significant contribution to the team. Hopefully the trend changes with 07 and 08 classes.

The 2004 and 2005 classes contradict your point. Lots of good contributors from those classes and lots of unprovens who should contribute this year and next year. I'm just failing to see your point about our lower star players being disappointing. It seems to me that we get as many key contributors who are 3 stars and under as we do 4 and 5 star players.

Like I said there are exceptions, but not every 2 and 3 star prospect is going to be a major contributor. If you guys want a class full of 2 and 3 star prospects well then . It's mostly hit and miss with the 2 and 3 star prospects. Some will be good and some won't do anything. I'd rather not take that chance.

I'd like to get this guys commitment regardless. We will land more than 3 4*s anyways, we already have 5 if you consider Hall and Sykes who should be 4* at the least.

182, I really do understand what you are trying to say. The more stars the better I feel. But, if a man has his heart set on being a Vol, you can't for much more than that. This is going to shape up to be a great class

Give me a 3 star that bleeds orange any day over a 5 star that states came to ut for early playing time :good!:

Give me a Charles McRae, Shawn Bryson, Scott Galyon, Johnny Jones, Dale Jones, and Al Wilson any day. These great players show why star recruiting systems are hogwash.

I would take this type of player any day over a Brian Darden, Jeter (RB from WV) and Daniel Brooks.

Ah back to the subject. The guy looks impressive, has good speed and size, but needs to work on his tackling. He needs to get lower instead and drive with his feet instead of trying to rip their heads off and going for a ride on their backs.

Why are we going after all of these 3 stars? Can we not land some higher rated guys? I mean, c'mon a few is alright but not the whole class.

We've had plenty of years where we had a bunch of 4 star and above players and still lose to Spurrier/Saban/Tuberville...

I say roll the dice with some of these guys.

Saw someone bring up the issue of grades...

He has a 3.1 GPA but only an 800 on the SAT as a sophomore. I took the SAT in 2000, and heard it changed since then (with scores being higher than they used to be).

Anyone know the current NCAA minimum for eligibility, 800 just got be a bit scared (yes, I realize he was only a sophomore).

I know you don't have to take the writing portion. Atleast they told me I didn't have to, but I did anyways.

Just because we're getting 3 star commitments doesn't mean that we're not still going after the 5 star guys just as hard. It's just tough to make up ground against other programs that have more success than us on the field lately.

Yes, "we are UT," but Florida is Florida, LSU is LSU, Georgia is Georgia, etc. All the schools we go head to head with in recruiting have great tradition and great facilities--and each of those three I just mentioned have been to BCS bowls a lot more than we have in the past 10 years.

It's as simple as winning. Win big enough to get to BCS games, remain relevant (in the national title hunt) throughout the entire season, get your spring football talked about on ESPN, and suddenly those head to head battles over 5 star players are a lot easier to win.

Isn't this the time to get 3 star players that are on the rise? A 4 or 5 star has more options so they usually wait longer to make a decision. I think it is a good plan since I don't have the inside connections that some have with the staff to know what the game plan for recruiting is.

THANK YOU. I mean, when are we going to have another Eric Berry, Chris Donald, or Kenny O' Neal (i know, i know you are gonna say two of them aren't even on the field yet) Are we even going to have a 5 star this class, or a bunch of decent 3 stars?

Kenny O'Neal isn't even on the team anymore. Chris Donald will be on ST's this year.

Yeah O'Neal is already gone and Donald is behind a walk on in the depth chart. Ben Martin was a ghost last year.

Meanwhile Dennis Rogan changed to a new position and had a successful year, and Nick Reveiz is outplaying scholarship players left and right.

Just how many true freshmen linemen do you see contributing significantly their first year?

well, Reveiz had to earn his way on, Donald was a 5* "stud". Go figure.

Who blitzed about every play at LB against weaker competition than others face at the HS level. He will earn his way into starting position by his JR year and people won't miss Reveiz that much.
