D4H's 2017 NFL Draft Preview

#76

Here is what you guys have been waiting for. My final thoughts on this year's NFL Draft prospects. I have divided the prospects into 3 groups (the ELITE, the BUSTS, and the SLEEPERS). The ELITE are prospects I believe will develop into stars at the next level. They should be among the best players at their position in the NFL. The BUSTS are prospects expected to go high in the 1st round that I feel will not live up to their draft ranking. This doesn't necessarily mean they can't play. They could turn out to be 10 year NFL veterans like Reggie Bush but based on where they are picked, they will be considered colossal disappointments because their production will not match the position in the draft from which they are selected. And finally, the SLEEPERS are prospects that will be picked in Day 2 or Day 3 of the draft that I don't necessarily think will develop into stars but will nonetheless outperform their draft slot dramatically. They should at the very least be productive starters. At the very best they might become pro-bowlers.

Looks like the Browns are gonna take Mitch Trubisky 1st overall.

Not surprising. The Cleveland Browns will always find a way to screw things up. Even when they are handed a future Hall of Fame Defensive End to them on a golden platter.

So now Garrett is a HOFer? You change more than a chameleon

You are one of the absolute worst people at contextual awareness I've ever seen.

Walker averaged over 30 carries a game for his college career. He then went on to the USFL where he had 412 carries followed by 293 carries followed by 438 carries.

Let's put a face on this...Walker had 1083 college carries (including bowls) in only 3 years. That's 361 carries a season. Adrian Peterson had 748, or 249 a season. Walker went to the USFL and spent another 3 years at 381 carries per season. All this before his first NFL carry.

So he takes his first game NFL snap with 2226 carries worth of wear off the tires but still manages to avg more ypc than Dorsett on some pretty poor Dallas teams that only win 14 games over the next two season. In '88 Dorsett is gone and Walker becomes the starter and goes for 1514 yards rushing (2nd behind Dickerson) with another 505 receiving. (though still on a lousy Dallas team) A damn fine season. I also think it pretty much finished him. By the time he got through the 89 season, only his 4th in the NFL, his carries had dropped off by 30% and his count was up to 3197 in his football career. Peterson's 3 college and 10 year NFL career are today only at 3166. Sure he kept playing, and producing, but he simply couldn't stand up to being the the focal RB anymore.

Think of Walker sort of like Earl Campbell* except the latter got to roll in straight from college into the NFL. Campbell is easily one of the best RB to ever play in the NFL. He was also pretty much used up by his 4th NFL season. After averaging 351 carries and 1614 yards over those first 4 season he'd only break 1000 one more time.

You have no idea what Walker might have really accomplished in the NFL and obviously a colossal lack of understanding of the talent Walker possessed. That the guy that never even saw the NFL before having more carries than many have in their entire career and then, in many ways, limp his way to being the #11 total yardage leader in NFL history is nothing short of staggering.

*If you don't know who Earl Campbell is do not be a complete idiot and try to act like you do and yes...he was THAT good until the wheels got worn down.

Great, factual post.

The franchise has been a grease fire for 40 years...

Cleveland making the mistake of actually listening to the 49ers bluff of wanting Trubisky lol.

I think they're also concerned that the Jets will trade up a few spots.

It's so perfectly Cleveland to have 2 of the first 12 picks and still be in a precarious position.

There isn't a QB in this draft that is ready to start any time this year. Worst year to reach for a QB IMO.

Lmao... Somehow Barnett isn't as good as Garrett when he clearly has better stats against SEC competition but Garrett is an future Hall of Famer? You're on acid.

Garrett does project better to the NFL than Barnett. Sack stats aren't the end all, be all for DEs, especially when offenses plan away from you and continually always leave a chip guy to double you. Don't look at Garrett's lower sack totals and think he isn't a great talent........look at the top 10 in sacks all time and tell me how many from that list were worth a **** in the NFL. Derek Barnett (not taking anything away from him) has exactly 1 more sack than Garrett

Garrett is overrated and picked up most of his stats from garbage teams. Not saying he isn't a great talent but way overhyped than he should be. Barnett is more productive and plays with a great motor every down. The only thing Garrett has over Barnett is NFL measurables.

DB does have exactly 1 more sack than Garrett, but over 80% of Barnett's sacks came against SEC competition. Garrett's isn't even close to that. I of course am partial to Barnett, but regardless, I just don't see the hype over Garrett. Or Trubisky for that matter. I think both are risks, and I think they're exactly what Cleveland Browns always draft. Highly hyped players that bust.

Agree, sacks aren't the end all, be all....Barnett also had 53 more solo tackles, 58 more total tackles, 5 more tackles for loss.

Also, all sacks aren't created equal....a breakdown of the team/competition each player recorded their career sacks against:

DB- MG-
SCar -7 Texas SanAntonio- 4.5
Kentucky- 5 Nevada- 3.5
Florida- 3 Louisiana-Monroe- 3.5
Georgia- 3 Lamar- 2
Vandy- 3 Rice- 2
Ole Miss- 2 Ariz State- 2
Alabama- 2 Auburn- 2
Oklahoma- 1 SCar- 2
No. Texas- 1 LSU- 2
Northwestern- 1. Miss St- 2
Texas A&M- 1 Ole Miss- 1
Missouri- 1 Arkansas- 1
Nebraska- 1 Alabama- 1

Nobody knows what either will do going forward. When predicting, depends on what you're looking at/trust more.....physical measurables (Garrett) or past play and production (Barnett).

I tend to look at the history or what a player has done to predict what he's likely to do in the future. Who knows which way is right? Plenty of great, productive college players bust/flameout in the NFL, while plenty others have been outstanding at both levels.

All I'm saying with my last post is that Barnett had the far better collegiate career.

You have been squirming around this issue forever. Just be direct.

Who do you think will be the better pro? Barnett or Garrett?

Stop with this waffling. And just go on the record once and for all that you think Barnett is the better NFL player.

What you call waffling, is actually called being smart. Unlike you, most people realize that it is nearly impossible to definitively state one player's success or lack thereof if someone could that someone would be extremely successful in an NFL front office and the team would have unparalleled success. This is even more true for fans which have less data available to them than the NFL front offices. KBvol is just smart enough to not make absurd definitive statements but to point out what factors point towards each individual being successful/unsuccessful at the next level.

This has been articulated to him many, many time and yet he still doesn't get it

I'll gladly say it:

I think Barnett is going to be a better NFL player. And I certainly don't have any orange-tinted bias.

You also think the Alabama players are gonna be great in the NFL. Bless your heart.

You're gonna be so wrong about this draft it won't even be funny.

Myles Garrett will be worlds better than Barnett. All the Alabama first rounders will be busts outside of Marlon Humphrey. And Deshaun Watson will be significantly worse than Dobbs in the NFL.
