Da Reds thread

I keep waiting for Farmer to fall back to earth and just doesn't. Just scored Winker on a RBI triple. I'd almost think about playing him at 3B when/if Jose Barrero is called up just to keep his bat in the lineup.

So tough. The guy is playing with a sports hernia that will require off season surgery plus the 15 HBP's. Yet, there he is game after game. Said he alternates between the ice bath and hot tub after every game.

I couldn't be a manager. I'd fine every relief pitcher that walked the first batter he faced. I'd release any relief pitcher that walked the first 2 he faced (so Hembree would be gone) and I'd release Hembree no matter how good he pitches because he's too damn slow and he sucks the air out of the whole team

Pretty simple baseball thing isn't it - don't walk batters?

When they look back on this season as an org they are going to hate themselves for not fixing the pen in the offseason. The hitting is top 10 with several top 5 in key stat categories even with all of the injuries to starters. The pitching is in the bottom third in ERA, yet, if you pull the pen numbers out they are probably around top 10. Signing and conducting regular season in-game tryouts with a million wannabes and has-beens to find a gem or two is not the way you win enough games to get in the playoffs.

It hasn't been easy to be a Reds fan for quite some time. Sticking with my pre-season prediction of third in the division. The Cards are only two games behind in the loss column and are a better org overall. They know how to win and rarely blow games like our guys do - seem to get more out of less. Brewers have really good pitching and are effective, if not good hitters. Not sure Bell is savvy enough to make this happen as he does not have much feel for what he has in pitchers, especially in-game situations. The window is still open to do it, but will be closing soon barring a spectacular collapse by the Brewers and a NL west wild card team.

I have given Bell credit this year but last night was an "aw shite" moment. If he can't see that Hembree is not closer material then what good is he as a manager? He's seen HH blow saves in the past week by walking people. He's got at least 5 better relievers in his awful------>mediocre bullpen, which means HH sucks. He's closer to being DFA than closer. This and his continuing to play and bat Suarez too high in the lineup are Bell's fatal errors. He needs to grow a pair and sit unproductive players

Agree. Bell's had 4 full months of play to know what he has. Stop the tryouts. Pen nearly blew a 6-1 lead going into the 8th inning today. Garrett comes in and does his 2 walks per inning with his glorious 6.55 ERA. Brach looks like Hembree. Even Cessa sucked. It's getting embarrassing.

During second inning yesterday:

“If you are worried about giving up a HR in the 9th you should not be pitching in the 9th.” The Cowboy on Hembree struggles

Y’all are so close to that wildcard spot. Keep plucking. The cards can’t seem to get off of the ground to even climb to the top of the hill, nor take one step up that hill.😳

Givens looks the part of a high quality reliever, which is encouraging. Glad to see Nick-C back and they say Moose will be back soon.

Need to sweep this series.

Nick Lodolo's Triple-A debut is over:
2.2 IN, 3 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 2 K, HR
51 pitches/30 strikes.

I think I may catch a Bats game or two next month when they come back for the final time to Memphis. I hope Greene or Lodolo will be starting so I can see one or both.

Mahle's dealing pretty good today through 5. Hitting north of 96 MPH on his 4 seam and throwing an 87 MPH splitter.

Broom time. Lorenzen and Givens shut the door. Well pitched game.
Well! Let’s see! At one time y’all were 5 out and close I think. There were a run where y’all fell to seven I believe. Now, here y’all are back at 5 behind. Right where you want to be again. The wildcard is a battle for y’all, only 2.5 games out. Y’all have caught the Padres, and it has to be a pretty good feeling where you are sitting at right now. Just think the Padres has got some more games with the giants and Dodgers later on down the line. That is going to cause a lot of late night scoreboard watching for us. You better believe now I’ll be watching the scoreboard out on the west coast. Way to end the week catching up on both teams.

Ok - here we go with a series that matters to both teams.

Castillo needs to get his act together. Last night was embarrassing.

Garrett, Stephenson and Bell are all clowns. At some point when the same pitcher is missing in the same spot with the same pitch over and over and over and over - you got to try something different. Stephenson was setting up outside on 3 ball counts when Garrett wasn't coming close. Holy crap set the target right down the middle and throw a fastball. If it gets cranked so be it. I despise walks and I despise players and coaches who put up with it.

Is there anything in baseball more ridiculous than the way extra innings games are handled now?

That was a lot of work by the players to come back just for Sims to throw it all away at the end.

Garrett has been a basket case all season. Don't use him in games you need to win, like last night. Let him mop up and trade him this offseason. Let somebody else deal with the head case. Remove every temptation Bell has because he cannot resist temptation.

I get the frustration and despise walks like you do. They are game killers. But Stephenson was doing what the he was told by the bench coach on each pitch. It's up to Garrett to hit the target. If not happening, it's up to Bell to yank his arse and the FO to get rid of him so Bell will not use him. He's been that way all season. Even when he has been successful for an inning he rarely hits the target.
