Daily Beacon editorial calling out Scotty Hopson

I think if you are a journalist you should never under any circumstance call out a player who is playing for a college that does not get in trouble and qualifies academically. If Scotty was making millions of dollars, then yes, that's fine. But they are kids. Not professionals, but amateurs. I think it is incredibly unprofessional to write an editorial or column ridiculing a kid in college because that journalist doesnt think the kid is performing to his liking. Let the coach decide if Scotty is hurting or helping this program. Its not about being right.. its about being professional. Let the fans ridicule him on a stupid forum. Not in a Newspaper even if no one reads them.

oh and im a man... im 40.

It's an amateur newspaper as well...

(not meant to be a joke or bash on the Beacon)

I think it's ridiculous for a student newspaper to write an article that is critical of another student over something like this.

regardless, the timing is awful. I think Scotty may have found his shot in the last game. We need him to play with confidence and let the game come to him. He gets in trouble when he tries to force things. I hope he can forget about any of that crap and just play. Sometimes it's all about confidence, and with Scotty I think it's mental in the first place.

And doesn't appreciate the fact that the only reason why we have Da'rick is because of a guy named Nash.

If he is going to bash the name of a player, he should be forever banned from this site. Calling Nash Nance a tool is uncalled for.

Any guy with the name Nash is a tool in my book.

Lol. My gf just looked at me like I was crazy because we are watching "FBI most wanted" on discovery channel and I just literally laughed out of no where. I'm also on my phone. Good stuff.

I haven't felt like Scotty has played to his full potential. He needs to drive more and play more physical. This next game, one of the keys is going to be "Get them in foul trouble." We need our slashers like J.P., Bobby and Scotty to drive in to get Lauderdale in trouble quick.

He did play well against Ohio, but I just feel like there's a whole different level that he isn't willing to tap into yet. If he does, then we won't even remember this thread.

I'm hoping this challenges him. I'm also hoping it doesn't force him into taking bad shots to try to give us a good numbers game.

I think we all just want him to carry his weight consistently, and when he's not producing on offense to be productive in defense, and the intangibles.

I love Scotty, but I am beginning to expect more from him, because I know he's capable of it.

I am with you on expecting more from Scotty. But I hope he never reads that article. He's timid enough as it is, and I don't want to see him passing up uncontested 3 pointers and backing out of drives anymore.

He read the article. He responded with a tweet yesterday to the effect of "try walking in my shoes"

Ugh. Self-pity doesn't bode well... But then, he was coming out of his shooting slump vs. Ohio.

yeah..... I think Hopson's problem is mostly mental to begin with. I'd feel better if our own school paper weren't screwing with him

If his only response to criticism is to curl up in a ball in a corner sucking his thumb then he will never live up to his potential. His problems seem to be all mental. I know he can be great. I just wish he'd realize that and stop taking some well-deserved criticism to heart. Suppose he gets to the NBA and gets drafted by a team like the Knicks. I'm sure the media would be soft on him there.... Right?

That is a little extreme. I doubt many can honestly say that they have never had bad thoughts about the name Jim Bob Cooter, who was a player. This is an internet forum, which is a great example of what free speech gives us and people are here saying our school paper should be censored because they dared to criticize a player that consistently underachieves? Ban a guy because he doesn't like a name? Ridiculous.
