The Vols first loss came early in the season, on October 5th on the road. Fayetteville is traditionally a tough place to play and history supports this.

The Vols just lost a road game to arguably a national championship caliber team, in the current toughest place to play in the country. UGA has not lost a home game in 5 years. Let that sink in, 5 years. The Vols, despite how poorly they played in the trenches, was still in the game with about 5 minutes to go. Georgia closed the game out, but until very late in the game, it was anyone's game.

Why, at 8-2 and factoring in these important factors, is Tennessee ranked so low? Why are they considered the bubble playoff team? There needs to be a major push for Tennessee's case and stand up to the corruptness that is becoming the playoff committee.

There is no way to justify Alabama's higher ranking, when they lost to Tennessee and sitting with the same 2 loss record.

Why is Alabama not being negatively impacted by their losses to Vanderbilt and Tennessee? If voters think Tennessee is not as good as Alabama, but Alabama lost to this inferior opponent, how are they being rewarded over said opponent?

You can debate it all day but the playoff committee sees Bama with a better win resume than Vols. They have wins over GA-LSU. Vols just have 1 statement win. I don't think any of that 'toughest place to play' really figures in for the playoff committee. Its all about who have you beat - who have you lost to.
LSU will finish unranked. The only statement is that LSU is a good brand, but that is an off the field (ESPN derived) subjective metric. LSU on the field this year is junk.

Who are your 12 teams then? It's one thing to say we should be in...who gets left out?

G5, ND, ACC, Big12 are 4 of the 12...leaves 8. Indiana, OhSt, PennSt, Oregon are pretty much locks...who are the 4 SEC teams? Texas, Ga, then probably comes down to 3 teams for 2 spots Bama, TN Ole Miss. That's a close call, and certainly not evidence of corruption.

But that is if season ended today...there will be upsets. There always are.

If we beat candy, that will be a win vs. Bama and a win vs. the only other team that beat the gumps. How is that not playoff worthy? The arky loss sucked but the puppy loss shouldn't hurt us imho
UT's Arkansas loss on the road is better than a OM's Kentucky loss at home.
UT's Alabama win at home is better than OM's Georgia win at home. (Alabama beat Georgia)
UT's Georgia loss on the road is better than OM's LSU loss on the road.

The only thing OM has that Tennessee doesn't is a 2nd quality win. They beat South Carolina, who is trending towards 9-3.

In my opinion, the first 3 points outweigh the last point. Here's to hoping the selection committee sees it that way.

good summary...I think that South Carolina win in Columbia puts Ole Miss over the top vs us, but it's an arguable point.

Until Tennessee puts together back to back 10-2, 11-1 type seasons, I believe "they" will still consider us a formerly great program that is now merely solid. We need to prove we're back, and I believe we will once again get the Bama type deference we had in the 90s and early 2000s

. . . The Vols just lost a road game to arguably a national championship caliber team, in the current toughest place to play in the country. . . .

LMAO. I mean, playing on the road in the SEC is always tough, but that glorified Sun Belt stadium and chronically overstated crowd is HARDLY the 'toughest place to play in the country'. Neyland beats it by a mile. Florida is MUCH tougher. As is LSU. The list could go on and on and on..........

Let's bring the uga admiration under control peeps.

Exactly. UT has only itself to blame.

They also have a better SOS overall and better SOS inside the SEC (thus why we lose the multi team tiebreaker). Both ESPN and Massey have Ole Miss with a tougher rated schedule. This is likely why outsiders favor them over us. Plus recency bias. They just blew out UGA and we just lost to them.

You're probably right, unfortunately, and if they beat Florida in the swamp with the way Florida's been playing it will only solidify their place ahead of us.

Another thing to keep an eye on with respect to Ole Miss is their results against common opponents. Taking where the games were played into consideration:

Kentucky: Big advantage Vols
Oklahoma: Slight advantage Vols
Arkansas: Big advantage Rebels
Georgia: Advantage Rebels
Florida: TBD
Mississippi State: TBD

If Ole Miss doesn’t lose to Florida. MSU is possible. Ole Miss always drops the egg bowl when everyone least expects it and vice versa. Weird things happen in the egg bowl and the favored team has dropped this game multiple times in the past.

The loss at Arkansas absolutely killed our chances.
Yep. Arkansas is not a very good team and our offense has been paltry most of the season in terms of point production. If we won that very winnable game in Fayetteville, this wouldn’t even be a conversation. Now, we have to win out and hope for a couple of upsets the last two weeks of the season. Sucks, but Heup needs to find the right combination of guys that are 2022 style playmakers.

I'm really interested to see what the committee does with Texas if they lose to A&M. We definitely have a better case and better SOS than they do. So if both of us are 10-2, I feel like Tenn should get the spot over them. I think it a) depends on how far they drop us tonight and b) how far would they be willing to penalize Texas if they lost? They would probably need to fall at least nine places even though they're losing to the potential SEC champion.

If UT and Bama, or Ole Miss, had to play a rematch at a neutral sight for a playoff position who would win at this point? I think we beat Bama because of home field advantage. Same as the UGA game.

As a Mississippi native, I confirm. The egg bowl is weird. However, MSU this year appears to have one of the worst teams in SEC history. I won't be holding my breath!

Bama has not played a team that is currently below .500. UT has only played two teams that are currently above .500.

The head-to-head comparison doesn't stick because of both team's results against UGA. So all that can be done is look at the entire body of work. It sucks that the factor that is weighing down UT is the one factor over which they have no control.
