Daytona Beach

Hey guys, I'm planning a vacation in Daytona beach. I've never been there and wanted to know what's there to do and good places to eat? I've been on TripAdvisor looking at things to do as well. Thanks!

Agreed. Don't got to DB. It's a cheesy, trashy place. Of course, you could be inbred, NASCAR loving, trailer trash, which if so, you'll love DB.

St. Augustine, Crescent Beach to the north are much better. Ormand is a little nicer due to zoning restrictions. New Smyrna to the South is a classier, less commercial place. There is a nice area just south between Daytona Beach Shores and Ponce Inlet, but it is monthly rentals only.

Ponce Inlet Lighthouse complex is a nice treasure and there are some good restaurants in the DB area. A shame you have to drive through DB to get there.

I hope you have a great trip, but IMO, Daytona is old, outdated and flat out sucks! JMO, TIFWIW. Enjoy!

If you are going to Daytona, make sure you get a Penicillin shot before you go.

As for St Augustine, its a wonderful spot......make sure you go to the Gator Farm there and watch them feed live chickens to gators lol.

Just a heads up, New Smyrna is the shark bite capital of the world. The waters there are literally shark infested.

Little hyperbole......90% of the attacks are because of surfers trying to surf the Ponce Inlet where shipping ships run through in that area and dump all these dead fish. There has never been a fatal attack and almost all are small bites and mainly from little spinners

We were originally going to myrtle beach for 4 nights but I looked at Daytona beach. It was a lot cheaper on hotels, $150 cheaper lol. That's with an extra night as well.

Honestly I think Jacksonville has better beaches than Daytona.......and cleaner

I like the wide flat beaches at St. Augustine. Daytona is narrow. Not much room on high tide. when I used to go to St. Augustine in the 80's and 90's you could drive on the beach. that was sweet. No manhandling beach stuff. Pull in near the dunes, unload and move back toward car as tide rises. Not sure if they still allow that though. Great family vacation town too if kids are in tow. If i had a reason to have to live in FL, I would go out of my way to try and make it there, or second choice around the emerald coast. If you can't cope with seaweed, St. Augustine is not an August beach. I guess that is a late summer thing anywhere on the FL Atlantic beaches.

I get that it's mainly bites from spinners and black-tips, but it is still a shark infested section of water. I've never heard about the ships dumping dead fish at the inlet. I think what mainly attracts the sharks is the fact that there is an inlet. That typically provides more food sources for sharks any time there is a stream or river connected to the ocean.

I hope you aren't staying at the Wyndham at Daytona Beach. We were there last November - worst customer service I have ever experienced at a beach resort.

Very seldom do people get bitten along the beachfront there....it happens but most of the attack numbers are out past that second sandbar out in the inlet. Never swim around a sandbar that far out when the drop is deep....hubting grounds for feeding sharks

Went a few times growing up. The best time we happened down to the space center and found out the next day there was a launch. Got up early the next morning and drove back down. It was a very emotional moment for me, even as a young child, and by far the best vacation we took.

We booked at holiday inn oceanfront. It's in Daytona beach shores, which I heard is not as crazy.

Been to a lot of beaches, St. Aug down to Ormond is my favorite stretch of Florida coast.

At the end of the day, there is only one beach which is wedged in between Little River and Litchfield.

We had thought about going to Destin Florida. But it's a longer drive, we will go there next year.
.

Screw Destin..I'm telling you dude, find a beach in the greater Tbay area and go there...Siesta Key..Busch Gardens...Ebor City..SOHO...St Armans circle...The Florida Aquarium and on and on..

Been to both Daytona and the Clearwater area and it's not even a comparison, the Gulf coast is much better. 😎

Each has it's +s & -s.
The wife grew up in Fla. and loves the beach and the ocean. So as penance for stealing her away to the mountains, pretty much ALL our vacations are to the ocean or gulf.

Needless to say we have at various times camped and vacationed from Destin around to Mexico Beach, all the Gulf coast and down the keys from Largo (Pennecamp), Marathon, Big Pine, Key West, back up to Miami (Coconut Grove for Biscayne Bay), And back up the Florida Coast and Atlantic seaboard, Outer Banks, to Acadia and Bar Harbor Maine.

My Favorite is the Gulf side. Indian Rocks outside St Pete up to Clearwater & Mexico Beach. Siesta Key. Anna Maria Island. But that's because I grew to like "Old Florida" beaches better than places like Miami (even South Beach or Coconut Grove). I prefer getting a house (VRBO) over a condo, and a condo over a hotel. So I have a place to grill or fry up my fillets from charter boat or surf fishing. Spend the bucks to do it right and don't do the party boat charter where you're cheek to jowl with other tourists. It can be as bad as a center seat on an airline. Just make sure the condo's been renovated in the last year or two.

Daytona is really fun for this ol' East Tennessee redneck during Speed Week. It was unreal in the mid 60's to early 70's when my family went. But those saying it feels run down now are telling some truth.

But if what you want is a jam packed Atlantic side Florida beach, it sure will do for that.

Been to Daytona several times in the 90's for Bike Week. Pretty crazy....as you could expect. And, as said above, it's pretty cheesy.
I gotta agree with the others that the Gulf/West Coast is much more fun with nicer beaches. I bought a house n Port Charlotte last year and love it. Captive, Sanible, Charlotte Harbor, Englewood, Venice, Siesta and Sarasota.
