Death of a Program

I want to see Tennessee rise to the level it once was competing for conference and national championships. It has gotten to the point where in this day UT needs to shell out the cash and hire a good big name coach who recruits respect.

I have always cheered for UT football, for obvious reasons, UK will never win.
I hope they don't blow this and hire some idiot that will ruin the tradition and drive the program further into the ground. This $hit has become almost as bad as our football, GET IT RIGHT and NO ORANGE PANTS for the next coach....just WIN!!................Smirnoff time

There have been a lot of losses the past two years. I am presuming that this will knock UT from the ranks of the 10 most winningest programs all time. This year should definitely drop UT to 10 after USC if not out of the top 10 altogether. Of course, it is just another statistic, but I always thought it was a pretty good statistic to have.

the tv commentator said that we are seeing a changing of the guard in the state of tennessee. That in itself is enough for a change. That is BS!

Well Fulmer had such a good run early on, and was there so long that the program was on auto pilot. Now that the university let him go, the administration has to evaluate the football program and make decisions about how to manage it. I am not convinced that winning at football is a priority at UT these days.

Right. Because a university can't demand excellence in both academics and NCAA competition. Good Lord.

First of all, you have no idea. More than one academic department, ones with good reputations in the academy, have been either merged or cut to the absolute bone. Faculty has been trimmed to a level that is embarrassing and those who remain are expected to take on far too much for far too little pay. This all the while money has poured in like water for the football team.

Second of all, this state and yes, we are a state funded school, has no money and yet we come up with tons to support a losing team in the most expensive sport we have. Again this is while professors in many departments are being eliminated and replaced with GTAs who make next to nothing.

Third, it is an INSULT to the students and alumni who make up the university community to imply that education is getting in the way of football. It's downright shameful.

Fourth, the University of Tennessee has a proud tradition of offering a great education at price most can afford. In comparison to other states, we're fortunate to have a university where you can receive quality education without being so indebted that you have to have well to do parents in order to have a chance after graduation. In fact, many students attend UT because it's a better deal to pay out of state tuition here than stay home. UT has won more awards than can be counted as have alumni.

Fifth, you can have good academics and a football team. Saying otherwise is the biggest lie ever told and many schools have both -- even SEC schools (UT was such a school before the football team hit the rocks).

Finally, education should ALWAYS be the first priority of any university. It doesn't matter who that school is. Without students there would be no university and no team to follow. If you just want a football team find a pro-team.

I hate to say I told you so sunshine pumpers. But I will !!! It's been obvious to me that Dudley needed to be fired since early last season. He hasn't coached or recruited well at all. Now you are seeing the evidence. I've been calling and calling for his dismissal and been called every name in the book. Now you can plainly see where blind optimism gets us. The trash heap of the SEC, that's where. You've got to fix mistakes when they first become evident. We didn't do it and now we are paying the price. Hope you idiots are happy.

I said the same thing LAST year and was excoreated, mauled, and shamed off the internet. I said Fooley needed to go after that 3 stooges punt return and blow out at Arkansas. I said he needed to go after the Kentucky loss. Again no one wanted to hear it. We have been chasing recruiting classes with every hire. We did again last year when he was retained to get another recruiting class signed and maintain stability. You cant chase recruiting classes at the expense of the wrong guy running your program.

There is no doubt that a university is primarily for education. But UT has a special football tradition, look at the history. And as you said yourself, there is no reason good academics and good football can't coexist in the same university. But to put it as bluntly as I can, Tennessee needs to view this next hire as an economic investment. And as far as us football fans, we know that if UT is making money from athletics, UT football is winning and there is money leftover to buy lunch for the professors.. GBO

I been saying that since early this year. UT football is dead, it's over. Recruiting will fall off to the point that only 2 star or lower recuits will be all we can get. Then money will stop coming in and the ad will have to liquidate assets. It's been a good run since the 1700s but all things come to an end eventually. Vandy is rising to take our place.

A great hire is all we need at this point.

Look at how Notre Dame was just a few short seasons ago. The right hire can fix all of this....

For instance, Pearl took Buzz's players and won immediately. The same can happen in football with the right coach.

A new coach should first of all, try to keep the juniors from leaving for the N.F.L.

Then try to keep any 4* or 5* recruit that has already committed to U.T.

Then get any of their 4* or 5* recruits that have committed to their current school to come to U.T.

Then assemble a good coaching staff, but leave Jay Graham, Sam Pittman & Hinksaw on staff and maybe Chaney. Chaney has been doing better since the UGA game......

Then take us to a bowl game next season and win it.

Then we can get off of life-support and breathe on our own or even be discharged from the hospital....

but on the bright side Tennessee fans will be able to relate more to Virginia and Maryland football fans, cause we are going to have the same type of team.

Hats off to Coach Franklin and Vandy. He has those guys thinking they can do anything. Not to mention he is blowing UT's doors off in recruiting. Great hire for them.

He is a great coach. He BELIEVES in what he is doing and has a real plan. Doodle...I don't think he really ever had a plan and obviously doesn't believe in what he is doing.

My god, we need to find Mike Hamilton and issue a warrart for his arrest. Vandalism, destroying Tennessee Football.

ive thought we hit rock bottom so many times now im just gonna wait til were headed back up to pinpoint it

I am convinced this is it. The KY game will be a battle of the pathetic. They seem to be playing with a little more spirit these days, not sure in the slightest we will beat them.

The question is:

How long will we be down here?
Can we ever compete for championships again?

Yes we will compete again. All it takes is the right staff to come in here and actually coach our players up and instill a positive and winning attitude.

ESPN will be making a 30/30 episode on this program and the title of the thread is perfect for it.

I'm on the fire Dooley train. But I don't think this program will ever be what it once was. As much as we love knoxville, it simply isn't nearly as attractive to 18 year olds as some of the other big programs. On top of that, no big coach is going to come here. Sorry boys, but that's the truth.

You mean like Tuscalooser, Gainesville, Starkville, Auburn, Oxford and Fayeteville? Trust me, if you had been to any of those places you would not being saying that. I would put Knoxville right there with Athens, Columbia and Lexington. The city of Knoxville is not the cause of our issues. It's the shi**y coaching, former AD and awful admin that are the root of the problem. UT has top 5 facilities.

Don't think we've flatlined yet. Still have to wait on the coaching hire. If it's Kirby Smart, then we can start carving out the tombstone.

I agree.

Look at what we have accomplished since hiring dooley.

1. Losing a 27 game winning streak to Kentucky.

2. Losing a 28 game winning streak to Vandy.
3. Losing a 14 game winning steak at Vandy.

4. The worse defensive record in school history.

Wrong. But the first time having 3 straight losing seasons since 1909-1911.

The Volunteers hadn't lost to Kentucky or Vanderbilt in back-to-back seasons since 1981 and 1982

Since 2009, the Vols are 0-12 against Alabama, Florida, Georgia and South Carolina.
