Defense Wins Championships

I don't think we were ever healthy in the secondary. If anything, we are vulnerable to depth. It's no secret that fast pace offenses inflate defensive statistics. Special teams and run defense were solid. Hadden annoyed me with his constant jawing and he always seemed to be more interested in stripping the ball than wrapping up and tackling but I can't be mad overall

And if you look at our per play stats, we actually had a top 20 defense (yards per play, not sure about yards per point).

Slaughter and Charles are safeties not CB's, Hadden barks more than he covers receivers, Flowers and McCullugh shouldn't even be on the field. You might as well play freshman and let them get experience.

I know our offense is fun to watch and we score alot of points. But until Huepel recognizes that you have to have a defense that can get a stop when you need it. This program won't rise to the top. I never believed we were a top 10 team and don't get me wrong it is by far the best team we have had in several years. Our safeties were out of position and took bad angles to the ball. Is that personnel or coaching? The same guy who is that position coach is also the DC. I listened to certain radio shows that said we kept playing people out of their normal position and asking them to do things that are their weakness not their strengths. That is a poor coaching. This is year 2 under Banks and our defense is just horrible. So, if he is going to stay, we need to bring in some elite recruiters. Because we will need to out recruit his and Willie's poor coaching skills.

So, is it Jimmy and Joe's or X's and O's that is our major issue?

And before you call me a troller or first-time poster etc etc etc. I have been on this page since back when Mr. Adams gave his after the game home party updates and JumpMaster was getting this thing started. I think it was called Gridiron. I just had to re-register because I changed email providers.

I'm pretty sure he realizes that, but keep in mind he has only been here 2 years and we are ahead of schedule.

Interesting.....tell me more about that. How exactly did Slaughter and Charles end up at CB instead of safety?

I think it’s definitely possible and been proven you can win with an elite offense and decent defense.
Yep, If memory serves me --every game Tn lost this year was followed by threads blaming Hooker for missing some wide open receiver. For a reference, just look at the threads/comments surrounding Milton and next years offense compared to the ones related to defense.

If memory serves every game lost ever has idiot fans blaming players. Some of which deserve it, some don’t. Hooker took responsibility for the Georgia loss but honestly it wasn’t mostly his fault. The line played terrible that game, hell both lines played terrible, offense and defense that game.

And like most posts that get started on here, we go off the rails and result to name calling and insulting folks. See you can insult people's intelligence but if they slap back, you cry foul. Maybe you should go shine both of your participation trophies from middle school and just not respond.
Now back to the point:
Coach MAC (Former NFL DC and Head Coach) on 104.5 the zone said several of our DB's were being played out of position and being asked to do things they just can't do. He said the coaches should know by now who could do what and asking them to do more than that is setting them and the team up for failure. But what does he know.

They were asked to do that because they were the only options. Our DBs rank 13th out of 14 SEC teams in terms of talent because Pruitt failed to recruit talented dbs.

So yes, we had to play safeties at corner because we have no corners to play

You lose all credibility when you say we are not a Top 10 team. That statement disqualified everything else you said.

if you have all the answers, why are you hanging out on a message board? Shouldn’t you be out there winning championships? I mean if it’s all so obvious surely there can’t be anything holding you back from GOAT status.

So FORMER Coach Mac was at our practices? Can you tell us why he upgraded to radio analyst?

Maybe having a ton of talent had something to do with Georgia……..probably OSU and Michigan too and being in the B-10.

I doubt D had much to do with TCU though…….22 points per game.

Heupel has one class that was his. He can only play with the players that he has and field a defense with what he has. They aren't the most talented, and Garner has finally got our 3 Star DL to play as a powerful unit. LB's are much the same. Our best On is a former RB. DB's were banged up and hurt a lot, but was our worst section. The defense will only get better. Heupel knows what his needs are and will address them as he already is doing. Look at the DB's coming in as EE.

All that matters is we finished 10-2 with some great wins, some hard to swallow tough losses. Orange bowl bound vs Clemson , what a great season . As for recruiting we will be fine + we add thru transfer portal. CJH has us going in the right direction. Go VOLS!!!! Great job to staff and players. With a 12 team playoff around the corner things are looking very promising.
