Defense Wins Championships

I would say Slaughter and Charles should have been at safety, but we needed corners and that's just the way it was.

Yeah, that was my point too. They weren’t doing it for the sake of it, but rather because of limited options. OP seemed to be proclaiming it was poor coaching to play them out of position despite a lack of viable alternatives

And like most posts that get started on here, we go off the rails and result to name calling and insulting folks. See you can insult people's intelligence but if they slap back, you cry foul. Maybe you should go shine both of your participation trophies from middle school and just not respond.
Now back to the point:
Coach MAC (Former NFL DC and Head Coach) on 104.5 the zone said several of our DB's were being played out of position and being asked to do things they just can't do. He said the coaches should know by now who could do what and asking them to do more than that is setting them and the team up for failure. But what does he know.

Here's where you ran into problems. You made two statements in your first three or four sentences that were straight up troll material. First you said "but until Heupel realizes you need to play defense"... as if he doesn't know that. He was handed a team where 30+ people bailed before he stepped on campus and it wasn't the most talented team anyway. Oh, and of the ones that bailed, many were the few good defensive recruits the failed staff had brought into the program.

Then you went deep troll by proclaiming we weren't a top 10 team.

Your odds of respectful discourse went right out the window at that point.

Wow, I love how someone who just joined this forum on Friday jumps in with yet another "this team is trash because __________" thread. When are we going to get the minimum posts before being allowed to start a thread rule. Just out of curiosity, what name did/do you post under prior to this "change of identification" as a VOL "fan"?

I stand corrected we are at 11, you are correct, sorry Vol8188. But everyone on here is so angry instead of just having conservations.
You started a hack job thread and are upset because no one wants to agree with you? Pot calling kettles black I believe applies here.

You said until Heupel recognizes that you need to get stops on defense. Do you realize that the bulk of this recruiting class has been used on defensive players? That looks like recognition to me. It also is an indicator that the issue is primarily the Jimmy and Joe's.
Yes....I'd venture to say Josh probably understands this situation a wee bit more than any of us here. He isn't ignoring or dismissing our defense in favor of our offense. We are recruiting as hard as we can to upgrade talent on that side of the ball. Building a defense that's elite, at least in my experiences, takes much longer than an offense. And we need depth on that side badly. When we were dominating the SEC we rotated DL a lot.

With offense scoring so quickly and often the other team is getting more processions also. They are passing more to try and keep up, thus skewing pass defense numbers. We do need improvement but it’s not that far away once we get depth and players The red zone defense was top 15 late in the year . Isn’t that what really matters? And the rushing defense was middle of NCAA I know pass defense was at the bottom, but I would like to know what the rush versus pass ratio was for opponents this year

Great post. We should try to be Iowa. Championship football.

Last years NC winner had what? Elite defense. This year’s favorite to win it again has what? Elite defense. Michigan has what? Elite defense. You can talk about it’s an offensive game now all you want and that’s true. Until you get to the playoffs. We will never win a championship with a top flight offense and terrible defense. That’s a fact.

And there hadn’t been a NC for decades with a terrible offense. It takes both. If either one is great then the other can be Good. Doesn’t have to be elite.
Give this team 4 good DB’s and a little more pass rush and they’re good, but not elite.
I’d still put my money on them against anyone

Pretty sure this is a message board where people post their opinions and ideas to share amongst the group. Maybe I’m mistaken on what this place is meant for. Apparently, opinions are not allowed anymore. How dare I contradict someone's belief. "Feelings" are everything. Please enlighten me on how I should post.
You can post whatever you want and you did. But when you say dumb crap like the #6 team in the country at 10-2 with wins over #5 and #16 isn’t a top 10 team, people will let you know it’s dumb. To act like our best team in the last 20 years isn’t a good team is dumb too. Even if we lose the bowl game we could finish in the top 10.

The Vols allowed an average of 287 passing yards a game in 2022, 127th in the nation. Can't find our rushing or total defensive rating. Can someone please post that? If we could just get into the 50th or 60th range. But in the 120's can't be all just poor talent, or can it???? The knock on Huepel at UCF was not enough focus on having a good defense or maybe the extra value of one. He is an offensive genius on the level of Steve Spurrier, and I'm stoked that he is our coach.

I never said this team was trash and yes, I know I'm dumb I've been married for 25yrs to the same women, and she has reminded me often of just that. This team was great compared to the last 15 plus year. But our defense or lack thereof was not fun to watch. It makes me throw stuff at the TV and curse.

If we only have less talent than everyone in the SEC not named Vandy, wouldn't you expect us to be around the 120s?

But you shouldn't be looking at yards allowed. It's one of the most meaningless stats in football. We allowed a lot of passing yards because we won 10 games. If we won less games, we would have allowed less passing yards and more rushing yards. But because we were ahead (by a lot against some teams) we forced people to throw.

The stat you should be looking at is that we were top 20 in yards allowed per play.

I know our offense is fun to watch and we score alot of points. But until Huepel recognizes that you have to have a defense that can get a stop when you need it. This program won't rise to the top. I never believed we were a top 10 team and don't get me wrong it is by far the best team we have had in several years. Our safeties were out of position and took bad angles to the ball. Is that personnel or coaching? The same guy who is that position coach is also the DC. I listened to certain radio shows that said we kept playing people out of their normal position and asking them to do things that are their weakness not their strengths. That is a poor coaching. This is year 2 under Banks and our defense is just horrible. So, if he is going to stay, we need to bring in some elite recruiters. Because we will need to out recruit his and Willie's poor coaching skills.

So, is it Jimmy and Joe's or X's and O's that is our major issue?

And before you call me a troller or first-time poster etc etc etc. I have been on this page since back when Mr. Adams gave his after the game home party updates and JumpMaster was getting this thing started. I think it was called Gridiron. I just had to re-register because I changed email providers.

There have only been 2 people ever volunteer to die for you: Jesus Christ and the American G.I.

you are unbelievable - what makes you think or feel our coach doesn't know our defense needs to get better - you only have so many tools to work with in any given year. Another criticizer of our best coach we have had in 15 years but go ahead - 10/2 is pretty good - number 6th ranked team in the country is pretty good but of course never enough for guys like you.

Dude those teams are elite on both sides of the ball. That elite UGA defense just gave up 30 to a team UT embarrassed on their own field. Their offense is elite enough to score 50. Michigan has the best running attack in the country and an extremely efficient quarterback. Both of those programs have been building for this for 6+ years. If you really expected the Vols to win an NC this year that’s your problem. Hell, UT just beat UF, Alabama, and LSU in the same year for the first time since dinosaurs roamed the earth and there’s people around here complaining that it’s not enough. That’s delusional. Tennessee overachieved this year, that’s a fact. The assertion that Huepel doesn’t know he needs his teams to play good defense is asinine. He inherited one of the most tumultuous programs in the country, and he’s way ahead of schedule.

And in case you didn’t know, it’s college football. The regular season is the playoff. At least until next year.

Vol8188 I appreciate your input. Do you know if we imporved on our defensive stats from last year? Where are you finding the overall defensive stats listed? Thanks

Here's what I was referencing. I believe I said "yards per play". It's actually points per play that we were 20th in. I haven't looked at enough stats from last year, but why would that be important? We lost multiple NFL players on defense and should have expected some regression, right?
