I see some talk out there, y'all need to cool your jets. The defense will be below average this year, almost guaranteed. Now is the chance to adjust your expectations . 6-6 with a chance at a bowl would be a win this year. The O-line is weakest link (again). Notice how Chaney has been working with the O-line almost exclusively? Not good. Pruitt needs at least 5 years to turn this ship around. Two 5-stars last year is great start. Problem I see is if we get embarrassed on prime time ESPN against BYU it could seriously hinder our ability to get more 5-star talent. Thoughts?

My thoughts? You have a classic case of battered vol syndrome. Our defense will be fine. Our secondary might be the strength of this team. We definitely arent going to get embarrassed by BYU.
You diagnosis is close. It could also be waking up with Jack Daniels disease.
Offense will be OK. Defense will be sound.
Being negative adds nothing but negativity and settling for mediocre brings mediocrity.

GO BIG ORANGE!

This is kinda what was said after the three and out with Dooley. But, look how that turned out.

I thought that after reading the first line that I shouldnt read anymore of this "negative nancy" post. Its a week before kickoff baby!!! Orange colored glasses and a 15-0 season are what we are all singing about this time of year!!!

Seriously though, I agree that O-line will be weakest link and I agree its unsettling that Chaney seems to be spending so much time with that unit (at least during open practice). Makes me doubt the capabilities about Friend more and more. However, I do think the O-line will possibly be upgraded from last years level of dismal to mid-tier/average by 4 or 5 games into the season.

The problem is secondaries don't win games, the trenches do. Given the vols deficiencies in that area over the last 15 years and the lack of wins, I would expect you to know that by now.

I think the defense will be improved a little this year. If the offense can give them some rest, they might be excellent.

In 2 years I think we could potentially have one of the top defenses in the county. Our defense will be feared!!

Your not taking into account that the Defense is going into year 2. We lost on the Dline but most guys came back. Less thinking a hell of a lot of reacting. Unleash all hell and beat on people for 4 quarters. Tennessee won’t be embarrassed by BYU Tennessee will win. Knoxville will be dry as a bone but they’ll win. The top talent will come just let it marinate a little.

Its common around here.

Pump your brakes
Setting yourself up for disappointment
Everybody calm down
Slow your roll
Cool your jets
Let's wait and see

That last one is especially funny, its like they skeert to wait by themselves, they need company.

I agree with that but really the trenches decide the big conference games. UGA, UF, Bama are won and lost in the trenches. We are a far more talented team than BYU. All the way around.

Our defensive line is terrible. Your platitudes aren't going to change that

I haven't read a lot of ridiculous expectations on here or anywhere else for UT really. Sure you get the occasional record thrown out there from time to time, but I don't think that is the majority by any means. If you re getting worked up because fans think this team can win 7 or 8 games opposed to your 6 then it sounds like faux outrage.

The OL hasn't been good for years. Down right terrible most of that time. Its been that way due to development, talent, injuries and the changing of systems.
The fact our new OC (SEC veteran), is working a lot with them during fall camp is not a surprise at all. He is the 3rd OC in as many years for some of these players. They were terrible last year (everyone knows that) and that wasn't going to change without some change. It will become a bad thing if he's still heavily involved mid to late season and the product is no better.

The DL is the question on defense. The interesting part about that is most would agree we were pretty average there last year and a year later we are concerned about replacing average experience or players? The unknown creates a level of tension sure. But is it possible the DL is just as good (maybe better) this year with guys in year 2 of a better S&C and defensive system as opposed to guys only in it for a year. Less a rash of injuries they will be better behind them at LB and in the secondary. I don't think they will be an elite defense, but I will be surprised if they are not better than last year. And that's not an unrealistic expectation at all.

Getting "embarrassed" by BYU would be a problem, but on Aug 22 we have no idea if that is going to happen. If it does and there is not a solid rebound in other winnable games the rest of the schedule (State, Vandy, USC, UK, Mizzou) , yes you will struggle to finish with a good recruiting class.

To the 5 year plan. It may take him that long to win something of significance, yes. Where you can say "we re back" But you will see signs of that happening going forward. Its not gonna just all of a sudden happen. You should see a difference in this years team from last year. If you don't Id start to worry and question if he makes 5 seasons.

You can’t even say that with certainty. We haven’t seen these guys play anything meaningful. Lack of experience is the only thing you can say with certainty. The guys we had on the line last year may have been seniors but they weren’t all that great in the first place. We have a defensive minded coach, so I’ll be shocked if our line play is “terrible.”
