Defensive Expectations

Our defensive line is terrible. Your platitudes aren't going to change that
Our D-line is inexperienced. We have much better talent on the D-line than we have had in the last 4-5 years. Experience can be gained by practicing and playing. The offense will keep the ball longer and will score more points which wil help the defense. The defense will stop the run better and create more turn overs. The finish of this season will be much better than last year's finish. Look for 7-8 wins with a bowl game.

hm wonder why
Just going out on a limb... you've never been involved in training and developing a team of people have you?

You can pull people out to work on specific things you need them to do. You can pull them out because they're ahead of the curve. You pull them out because they're behind the curve. You can pull them out because you have more than one competent trainer and have decided to divide the group into sub-groups to get more done. I strongly suspect this last answer is the correct answer. Regardless of where they are, putting more focus on both lines would not be a bad idea and especially if they feel really good about the others.

AND AGAIN... you are basing this on the 15 minutes the media gets to see of the units running through drills.

I see some talk out there, y'all need to cool your jets. The defense will be below average this year, almost guaranteed. Now is the chance to adjust your expectations . 6-6 with a chance at a bowl would be a win this year. The O-line is weakest link (again). Notice how Chaney has been working with the O-line almost exclusively? Not good. Pruitt needs at least 5 years to turn this ship around. Two 5-stars last year is great start. Problem I see is if we get embarrassed on prime time ESPN against BYU it could seriously hinder our ability to get more 5-star talent. Thoughts?

I'm going to go ahead and be excited. It's football time in Tennessee.

This should be good.

Love these assumptions being made before a game has been played. Secondary should be elite, LB corps is going to be improved, D-line is unproven and that's the only way I'm gonna label that position group. To say they are terrible is pretty silly. Offensive line has better pieces and has gotten bigger up front but relying on freshman to perform at a high level is 50-50.

I think I'm part of the "some people" that you were talking about. You think I need to cool my jets on being excited about Pruitt and his staff because, you know..Dooley and Butch?
Nope, you misunderstand.. the guy saying cool it on any expectations because Pruitt needs at least 5 years to get us good again need to realize that’s the same mistake we made with butch and Dooley. I’m not sold one way or another yet on Pruitt but i believe it to be a massive misconception that in today’s college football landscape the right guy needs at least 5 years to show you something. That attitude is literally what sink us into this ridiculous hole we are in, and yet some still preach the same thing. I hope Pruitt is the guy but if he hasn’t show huge improvement by at least the end of year 3 id imagine he is another dud, and if so no reason to cling on to him for longer in blind hope that he will magically turn it on. Like I said though I’m not ripping on Pruitt, he deserves more time for sure.

I got a good laugh out of this. Give it up. John Adams; nobody pays to read your inflammatories any more.

I mean. What a ridiculous exercise in futility, trying to tell a Tennesseean what to do.

While I disagree with OP, how can you say we have better talent on the DL? They have yet to play, but the ones we had last year (all but Savion, Middleton, Elijah - of which I'm not sure any are projected to start) did not start last year. In fact, they weren't in the top 4. That was our best run defense in a decade and we are now down the first 4 guys. To top that would just be insane imo. Just being honest, I think this will be a much better team, but not because of the DL. That is going to be our one hindrance, if I had to estimate.

Luckily this is a defense that really works off what the DBs can do. That limited us last year, but will not this year. LBs should be better as well. DL just needs to hold serve, so to speak.

Dude, I respect your posts, but you don't know that we DON'T have a better DL than last year. Emerson was injured, as I'm sure you know. Where does it say that the 4-star that got a redshirt because was injured must be assumed to be bad? And Middleton is a big role boi, said to have surprisingly good speed and agility. Butler was one of most improved in Spring. S. William's we don't even know. SImmons ... I have no qualms about this big kid giving some snaps in relief. Notice I am not even leaning on Solomon at this point. Mincey can play in the 2-deep. Bumphus we have't even seen what he can do ... but we might be fixin to.

I think our secondary will be top 20. I think the linebackers will be improved (Bituli and Ignont are more experienced, and replace an injured Kirkland with a freshman Henry T), OLB should be fine with Taylor, crouch, and Johnson. It's mainly the D Line though. There's almost no experience among them, but they are significantly larger this year (I think 13 pounds on average). That should help them a little bit. I think they'll be better overall than last year.

Lowered expectations played HUGE role in getting UT to where it has been for the last 10 years. First lowered expectations from Fulmer to his players and assistants. Then lowered expectations for Fulmer where "getting there" once in a while was good enough even if he didn't win the big games. The expectations frankly have been too low for every coach since.

The back 7 on D look solid. The DL is an enigma. They have size. They have athleticism. They have no experience. BUT... that's why you spend the money to hire the kind of staff UT now has. If some sort of simple natural progression is all we're supposed to expect then the money paid to Pruitt and his staff is a MASSIVE waste. Hire cheap coaches and let the players learn at what other programs consider a normal curve. If you are bringing in guys like Rocker, Rumph, and Sherrer.... the improvement curves of your front 7 need to be MUCH better than "average".

How do you know it isn't good? You are basing this off of the open portions the media sees where they run through drills. That's probably 15 or 20 minutes out of a 2 hour practice.

Maybe Chaney simply wanted to increase reps?

Could it also be a "good" sign that they are close enough to knowing what they have that they are splitting the C's and OG's from the OT's? You are reading WAY too much into what reporters are observing for a fraction of practice. I would also say that the QB, RB, WR, and TE coaches have a much smaller task either because of experience, number of players, or simplicity of what they're doing.

As for the OL overall, IMO their problem by the end of last season was almost all physical. It wasn't guys not knowing who to block but rather the fact that 270 lb OG's usually don't handle 310 lb DT's very well. According to earlier reports, the OL's averaged adding 20+ lbs since last season ended. Pruitt stated that they entered August last year with 3 guys who weighed 300 lbs... and this year 11.

We don't know enough to issue definitive statements about whether they'll be better or be the "weakest link" again. But Pruitt thought his OL last year would surprise people before Kennedy and Smith went out. They're in better shape with or without those two this year.

If 6-6 is really good enough for you with this roster... then UT probably should have just given either Dooley or Jones a raise and extension then settled in to being a 3rd tier long term. For me... I have no interest in that scenario.

The simple answer is no. It is exactly that kind of low expectations that got us to where we are. Pruitt seems to know it. He's in a big hurry to show measurable improvement right away. He knows he has a measure of grace from fans and momentum with players and recruits right now that will dry up if there's no or minimal improvement in the first 3 years.

I'm not exactly sure where this "5 year" thing came from. If a coach isn't recruiting effectively enough when he's the exciting new guy to improve sooner... what on earth makes you think the nations top recruits will be attracted to a coach who hasn't done anything for 4 years?

BYU is a good program who has beaten good teams lately. They beat Wisconsin and Arizona last year. A loss would be a pretty major setback IMO because it would raise the stakes for winning more of the questionable games later.

As far as two 5-stars goes, UT could end up starting Kennedy a 4*, Wright/Smith/Morris 5*, and then one of several 3/4* players who have had at least 2 years in the program.

The OL was MASSIVELY underdeveloped under Jones. UT has several 4/5* signees with several more 3* with good or, in Tatum's case excellent, offer lists.

If you are the kind of person that tries to set expectations so low that you won't be disappointed... "pump your brakes". You are no more the realist than those talking about 10 wins.

Since you asked...

I predict a top 5 in the SEC defense that leads the league in takeaways and Nigel is getting first round buzz by year’s end thanks to The Pruitt Effect.

He knows Solomon isn’t eligible and gotta get those two ready to play ASAP.
Elijah and Savion both practicing nose guard, Solomon is a DE. Right now at NT, we have Emerson, then Elijah, Kingston, Savion, whoever else. That’s why he working with them. They’ve had Middleton, Bumphus and Mincey at OLB the last few days, which tells me they’re actually MORE confident that Solomon will play, since he is a DE as well. Why would they be trying their potential DE starters at other positions?

No way in hell they are playing 300 pounders at OLB. You didn’t mention Butler. He’ll likely start at one of the DE positions.
Woefully inexperienced group. Will have to grow up fast.
