Deferring to 2nd half is stupid

And Georgia beats 98% of the teams they play genius. Time to try something different and maybe WIN a big game for once this year.

What's with you anyway? Kinda aggressive IMO.
This coach has won several games previously dominating the “middle 8”. LSU last yr was a perfect example. It’s a huge advantage having the ball at the end of the 1st half & again at the start of the 2nd half. Hell, it may have worked again last Sat if Wright doesn’t fumble.

We know why you’re not a coach.

They usually defer to get the crowd going. The crowd can let loose when the opponent is on the field. Trying to set the tone for the entire game.
I see. My response would simply be this, why not take those opening minutes to get the offense warmed a little? The crowd is still getting situated and drinking a couple of sips of beer anyway.

I say take every opportunity you get to put pressure on Georgia. Who knows, maybe Joe hits 2 or 3 deep passes and the run game opens up. Maybe the Vols D-line gets TFLs, pressures and sacks all day. That would be nice to see. I will be screaming at my TV from all the way down here in the Soda City.

I see your point, and it makes sense. It's puzzled me over the years too.

You would be a great coach. Right there with all the other coaches that lost to Georgia.

You are assuming that you always get the ball last in the first half if you defer. That is TBD.

Momentum can be gained in any phase of the game, but getting the ball first is the best way to get more possessions in the game.

I didn't say that, you did.
Here’s your comment

You insinuate that if you defer you lose to Georgia. Well everyone has the last 3 yrs. So Georgia hasn’t played a great coach in the last 3 yrs? Interesting

Hey, keep score. See how many “bad” coaches like me choose to defer vs your genius of taking the ball.

I guess I deserved to be called an idiot for saying deferring is stupid, and that is a dumb ass comment. I should have expected someone would hit back at that one.

I still say my point is valid, and I am not the only one in the thread who thinks so.

No big deal though.

Tennessee at home is easily the Dawgs toughest game this year. Vegas has them by 10. I think that means something. Ole miss at #9 was by at least less than that. What bowl game do we get when the dogs lose Saturday, and lose to Bama in Atlanta. Even if they win they deserve nothing, they play nobody

What bowl game we get doesn’t matter to me at all.
Let’s just play the game and “if”! We win we can worry about the bowl game

Some of you people, are out of your ever loving mind!
or should I just say “well bless your heart”

ain’t no way in hell we are beating Georgia this weekend! Apparently none of y’all Georgia play this last weekend, I really hate saying this, but, I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a well oiled machine

Given that we haven’t exactly come out strong in the second half of any real game this year, I’m for taking the ball if we win the toss.
Imagine a nice 5 minute drive to open the game. The crowd would get into it. Have a few sips of beer and be ready to get loud when we kick it back to Georgia.

Besides, the Vols could just as easily come out in the 2nd half and get a sack and 3 and out right away. That's just as good or better.

Get the momentum either way.

That's it.

If I was CJH and I won the toss Saturday, I am taking the ball. This offense needs to score as often as possible, and you can't risk even a single possession.

Take the ball coach Heup, if by some wild chance you are reading VN these days.

Get the ball and go out there and punch UGA's defensive front right in the mouth while our O-line is fresh. Set the tone and hopefully get some points on the board, but whatever you do, don't defer to the 2nd half.

I know a bunch of ya'll will disagree, but I remember when no one did that. It was common sense back then. You win the toss, you take the ball.
This is the way to go and Kirby has even said that part of UGA's success is because they score early. ie their game plan relies on being up by a TD or a FG and the opposing team feeling the pressure of catching up.

The first few possessions are scripted to catch the opposing team off guard and either leading at the half or having the momentum at the half. If UGA is trailing at the half, Kirby will make an adjustment the opposing coach has yet to see that day and THAT should be more effective than what they had been doing. His point was that he evolves pushes a new narrative at the half and that's why UGA can come from behind at the half or extend the lead they have at half time.

Anyway... other's may disagree with you, but when it comes to UGA or Kirby, Kirby wouldn't disagree with you. When UGA defers, Kirby says it's a calculated risk. Anyway, good for you for mentioning it as a topic of discussion, because it's highly relevant when playing UGA.
