College football can be brutal. I always hope for a great season when it starts, but I also have learned to temper my expectations, due to the wandering through the darkness from Fulmer to Heupel. However, looking at Heupel's record entering his 4th year, I can't help but expect something big this year. This is the most talented team to wear the Orange in what seems like forever, and has depth to go along with the talent, so I think it's okay for me to be cautiously optimistic.

For me it's a moving target, my expectations now could be different if we go to UGA undefeated like 2022. 22 I was looking for an 8-win season then things change. I think all teams that have a realistic chance are just wanting to get in the 12 and let the chips fall where they may. The 12 will all be good to great teams with the exception of some years when the G5 teams are down, and they have to pick a G5.

Yep, with our schedule, I’ll be very happy to end the regular season with a Playoff spot without being too beat up. Y’all’s schedule is also pretty tough. If I were a Vol, I’d be very happy to end with a Playoff spot and have a chance to make some noise in the postseason.
I’m hearing that depth along the D line might be an issue for you guys. Is that a legit concern or are people just nitpicking trying to find any weakness they can?

It could be an issue. We don’t lack talent, but if we have injury trouble experience could be an issue. There are many saying that the D-line could be a weakness for us, and I think they are trying to compare this years guys with what we had in 2021 and 22 which just isn’t fair. It’s completely ridiculous to expect a d-line to be like ours was in 2021.

But yes it could be an issue. Like last season it hurt us in the SEC championship game. We had to have a stop on Bama’s last drive and Bama bullied us off the ball and we couldn’t stop them. If we had we likely win, but Bama pushed our Defensive front around on that last drive. So it isn’t outlandish to think it could be an issue this season, depends on how far the youngsters have come in their development likely.

Too many good teams this year.
Even Georgia doesn’t have those kind of expectations and they’re #1.

Yes they do. Georgia and Ohio State have national championship or bust expectations every season. Same with Bama when Saban was there.

If Nico is a generational QB then our expectations should be the same. It's national championship or bust. The funny thing is if you listened to all the interviews with the players this year during media day they were saying the same thing. Our team expects to win the national title this year or it'll be a huge disappointment to them. As fans we should hold the same expectations.

I don't get this mentality at all. How do you glean any enjoyment out of being a fan if the only thing that satiates you is something that happens so infrequently?

"Shoot for the moon because even if you miss you'll still land among the stars."

"It's better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all."

Being scared of failure is no way to live. I'd rather hold myself to sky high expectations and fall short than paltry expectations with the intent to fulfilling them.

"I will be happy if Tennessee" ...... should have been "I will ONLY be happy if Tennessee"

I stopped after the first selection. Who would not be happy with a natty.

But this is not something WE are in control of. Should the players, the coaches, the staff members, the administrators, etc "shoot for the moon" when it comes to bringing success to this program? Absolutely! We have zero control over the success or failure of the program, besides showing up and cheering for the team. We are...if you really want to boil it down to its purest form...customers! We are patrons. We pay money to be entertained on Saturdays in the Fall. People can feel however they want as fans. It just seems to me that fanhood would be pretty miserable if you only looked at it in such a singular "natty or bust" way.

Different mindsets for different folks I guess cause what you're saying right now makes no sense to me. How can you as a fan go into any game or season expecting to lose? Why even watch the games then? I watch every game cause I expect us to win. Now if we lose do I go into the dumps? Not necessarily. Most of the time it's simply on to the next one. But there are rare occasions where a loss stings for a while. But that's the nature of life. You can't go through it trying to limit getting hurt. Sometimes the hurt is part of living life.

Oh believe me, it stings for me when we lose as well! I NEVER take losses as something that doesn't affect me. I just believe more in the law of probability, rather than possibility. I'd rather be an informed fan, know where we are talent wise, and adjust expectations accordingly. I don't do it to shield myself from disappointment. I do it because it allows me to define reality-based success, and not be some mindless starry-eyed dreamer.

Success sounds greater than expectation, so I said make the playoff.

That said, expectation is 8.8 wins. Sooo, typically 9-3. Does that make the playoffs? Depends on competitiveness and other teams.

8-4 would be slightly disappointing. 10-2 would be a nice surprise.

The line is drawn at 9 wins for me. Anything less is a failure and no excuse to go 8-4. 9-10 is realistic with the roster we have. UGA is the only team that is hands down better. A case could be made for Bama, they're probably still a little ahead on roster but they have a new coach and we have them at home. OU on the road will be tough but they are not on the same level as Bama or UGA IMO. They will be talented but they have question marks. UF, UK, MSU, Arky should all be wins. NCState could be a tricky one, but I think we're just better.

Part of being a fan is being fanatical. That's where the term comes from. Being some high and mighty objective neutral observer is not what being a fan is about. Being a fan is about expecting your team to pull off a miracle even when all objective evidence says otherwise. If not, then once again, why even watch the games?

We need to win 9 games. I feel like less would be a letdown in some game we shouldn’t lose. Anything more than 9 wins is even better.

Road games worry me. We haven’t seem to always play good on the road the last few years. We need to beat NC State and Oklahoma to make an early season statement

"Define Success For This Season"

Beat the absolute dogsh** out of Kentucky and Vanderbilt.

All else is gravy.

Yes, I despise those people that much.

Success will be getting to watch game after game, where our talented play-makers on both O & D (and special teams) do indeed make plays, for our enjoyment. I will savor and cherish each one of those, and will be happy for the privilege of getting to be a fan of this program. 🧡

Edit: And I do have burnable furniture stockpiled on carport.
