DEI = Racism

Elon hires engineers from India and in response many white American engineers are saying they just need more investment, and training, and opportunity to close the gap...sounds familiar

Are they asking for equal opportunity or equal outcome?

If they’re asking for equal outcomes, equity - they can get bent.

If they’re asking to be hired specifically because of their identity, because “there aren’t enough of them” - they can get bent.

common knowledge this nation has a severe shortage of STEM grads, and one would have to be a serious mess not to get a job..and Trump has always supported these immigrants that bring self sustaining value. I fail to see the issue and if any white engineers are complaining then they need to look in mirror. DEI is the antithesis of meritocracy.

Lack of work ethic is a bigger issue.

Hiring foreign engineers that (presumably) are smarter, work longer/harder hours, and are more productive… is the complete opposite of DEI.

It costs companies money to sponsor foreign engineers on visas. It’s expensive.

If you’re a native born engineer, and you can’t provide a better value proposition than a foreign born engineer - that’s a you problem.

Costco is pushing back — hard — against the anti-DEI movement

Costco is battling an anti-DEI wave with a stern rebuke to activist shareholders looking to end the warehouse retailer’s diversity ambitions.

Costco’s board of directors unanimously recommended that its shareholders vote against a proposal brought by a conservative think tank, the National Center for Public Policy Research, that would require Costco to evaluate and issue a report on the financial risks of maintaining its diversity and inclusion goals. The group criticized Costco for possible “illegal discrimination” against employees who are “white, Asian, male or straight.”

Costco has a chief diversity officer and a supplier program that focuses on expanding with small and diverse businesses. It also donates to organizations like the Thurgood Marshall College Fund that serve minorities and underrepresented groups.

Yep. You also probably chose the wrong engineering field. My kid brother graduated from NCSU a nuclear engineer. At 22yo when he geaduated, Progress Energy and Duke Power COMPETED with their offers for him. He chose Progress and started out at a little over $100k a year with an immediate $15k relocation bonus. He lived in Raleigh at NCSU. He " relocated" to an apartment across town and banked the $15k. If you graduate in todays job market with the STEM deficiencies and cannot land a good paying job then you chose poorly and/or have SERIOUS personal issues.

This is why DEI doesn't work on highly technical jobs... you think someone with minimal experience and lack of motivation is going to buck the system?

When I was flying regularly I always said if the pilot in command isn’t willing to get on the plane I damn sure am not willing either.

Flying out of DFW probably a decade ago we were standing there watching as the catering truck drove right into the wing. No announcement for a long time but everyone saw it. After a few minutes a pilot walked over and stood by me looking out.

Me: You the pilot?

Him: Yep!

Me: You getting on that airplane?

Him: Nope!

Me: Ok that’s good enough for me I’m not either.

We both turned and walked away from the gate.

In 40 years over several downturns across many industry segments I never saw an engineer that I thought was worth a damn without a job for long unless they wanted to be (using the situation to take a couple of months off, stuff like that) regardless of race, gender, or age.

And where I work(ed) I have always said they could fire about a quarter of the technical pay grade people and as long as they hit the right group we wouldn’t miss a beat. And if they redistributed some of that salary to the remaining 3 out of 4 we’d likely pick up some productivity.

I drove a catering truck back in my college days. Doors were always right by the wing and jet engines. 🙄 cold winter nights were the worst…. They’d spray deicer all over everything and the trucks platform would be slick as hell.
