Department of Government Efficiency - DOGE

I just read something and I don't know if it's true.

So apparently Trump paused Mexican tariffs because Mexico said they would bring 10,000 troops to the border. Last year, 2024, they stationed 15000 troops at the border. So, are those troops still there to make the total 25000 Mexican troops at the border or are there only 10k there now?
Don't know, but numbers dropped considerably from June/July onward when Biden limited asylum to make us forget the other 3.5 years of flooding the border. Numbers are down further since Trump took office.

If they can **** can some of this bloat within the government and then subsequently get fired, so be it. But it needs to be done. At least we will be rid of it and the American public will see what a drag on their taxes these things have been. But the democrats sure as hell won't do it, so here we are. It's surprising that there is so much support on this here forum for government waste. (Well, not really)

As to whether they are overplaying their hand, the god of the left (government) will always garner more support from the left so once again it will depend on how many come out to vote in the next election. So let me ask you in all sincerity: Since the Dept of Education has been in existence, American standing wrt education has steadily fallen in relationship to the rest of the world. Is that a good return on our money? Is it something we need to continue to prop up?
Government dollars should be spent more effectively, and the Dept of Education is no exception. I realize what many think about the state of education and they often cite how we are 19th in the world (or something like that) despite our massive expenditures in education. I would like to offer a different perspective. That placement (19th) comes from data collected from the PISA assessment. Basically, it's a test taken by students in certain grade levels to determine their academic progress. Of the countries choses, America is the only country that includes Special Education students in the same building as all other students and make them take the test. If America were to exclude those students (like countrires such as South Korea, Finland, and the UK) our standing would jump to 4th.

To add further context to the Dept of Education, Reagan promised to cut it but didn't because of "Nation at Risk" was published in 1983 or something. It showed the educational system in crisis, which led to Reagan changing his mind. I say this because do not expect the Dept of Education to just be cut and ok with it. They, or as some call it the "Swamp", will certainly fight back. I'm not so sure they will be effective this time, however, with all the BCS that happened during 2020 along with the social issues.

I think some things at the Dept of Ed are out of control. My fear is similar as with USAID. The good parts will be thrown out with the bad parts for no other reason but "cuts".

Throw it all out, if something is needed than you can recreate it. They are going to have limited ability to slice up Dept of Ed. meaning throw it all away.

I really don't want any of my money going to it... until all the bad actors are gone.

The problem with that is that the only parts that survive (just as in a nuclear war) will be the rats and cockroaches.

Should we take bets on which states will increase their education funding to replace the DoE fund they currently receive, but soon won't, and which will just tell teachers "GFY, do more with less"?

There are no such things as "government dollars".

woooooooo coming on strong with the 'insults'.

Team America pal. You're damned right.
Department of "Education" is next on the chopping block.

MAGA
That wasn't necessarily a personal insult. You have always posted from a simplistic "my team won" standpoint than taking a stance on an issue no matter who supports it. It's become the majority on this forum

Could you at least admit that the argument over educational rankings, as currently presented, is not accurate? I get what you mean, and you may be surprised to learn, that I don't completely disagree with it. I do worry about my disabled niece, however, when some of the federal protections from the Dept are rolled back. I think you would be too.

I think the percentage of special ed students compared to the percentage who can't read at grade level, severely test that theory.

they need to get out of the student loan biz at a minimum.

Please educate us on the waste in SS. Don’t think the American public wants to pay 15% of their lifetime income into a retirement plan only to have some billionaires decide to reduce the earned benefits.
Uhm. Dead people still getting checks? Isn't it estimated there are hundreds of thousands of dead people still getting checks and, surprisingly, still cashing them?

A little because I'm not sure who is also working with him and what the real priorities are moving forward except just to cut everything. I'm worried that some good programs will be cut only because they will be grouped in with other bad apples. For example, not everything done in USAID is toxic, but it's all going to disappear now apparently.
Considering that every single dollar disbursed by USAID is borrowed, let it burn. Do away with it.

Not picking at you specifically with this question, but would you borrow $1000 to pay for this crap personally?

I don't know the numbers, but agree there is a lot of fraud needing cleaning up. I'm not sure how easy that is, but it must be done. It's all part of the program's continued viability.

So it only counts if someone sues?

Defending the govt is the last thing I'm doing. You all are the ones celebrating govt shutting down speech. This is exactly like the last admin yet you've switched sides since you agree. Consistency
The government is not. The majority owner of a private enterprise is managing what happens on his platform.
