Depth at RB

If the vols ol is the best in the conference or nation like some on vn say then an average back can have a great year..:D

Also sounds like some are making excuses already before the season starts.. we shall see.

I'm guessing Lee needed an 18 to "pass" because of GPA. Means he had at least a 2.5 GPA. 16 with a 3.0.

It is my belief, after watching the film, that Lee could be a solid back, and an elusive back for change of pace for Hurd. Lee, if his injury is now 100%, only has film from his JUNIOR year. He could easily come in and show out, and get solid playing time this year. If Neal doesn't learn to look up and use his eyes, Jabo could end up starting.

It's actually way more complicated than that nowadays. For the regular student, schools typically look at the composite number like a 19 (which is the average score in states where 100 percent of graduates are tested -- not all states do that tho). Admissions doesn't really care beyond your composite score unless you're applying to a highly selective school where a subject score might matter in terms of whether or not you fit with their program.

The NCAA, however, doesn't look for the main composite number or even the regular subject scores. What they look for are the subscore totals of each subject (basically each section of a subject test) and whether these subscore totals at up to 86 -- the minimum for NCAA Div. I.

It's about as clear as mud but gives the NCAA another cashflow when a prospect signs up for their eligibility center.

Not to knock these kids, I know they have some talent, but you gotta define average then, cause their production and lack of ability to break tackles/finish runs and rip off long runs at this point has screamed average at best to me. Even Coach Gillespie has said this recently.

If you run around 4 yards per carry, that's average. Both ran more than that.

No, little more to evaluating your rbs than that, to say the least. Anybody I've heard discuss Lane and Neal last year and this year have described their performance, to this point, as very average and I agree.

To me, the above average RBs in the league last year were Hill at LSU, Lattimore at SCar ( pre injury of course), Gurley and Mitchell at UGA, Yelden and Lacey at Bama. In my mind, Lane and Neal were not close to any of these guys. Hopefully Coach G gets their potential out of them or one of our other RBs steps up and surprises.

The depth, short and long term, at RB, LB, DE/DT, and DB should be horrifying to the coaching staff and to anyone who cares about UT football. In the 2013 class, one RB (Jabo Lee, hopefully his vast ACT improvement doesn't ring too many alarm bells with the NCAA), two possibls LBs (Corey Vereen, who is now a DE, and JRM, with rumors of him playing S or RB), three DEs (with one or two probably moving to DT, which simply means one position or the other is short), and four projected DBs (three corners and one safety). In the 2012 class, UT has one out of three RBs left (Alden Hill and lost Borque and Watson), have the only LB left (Bynum, a RS-freshman), have three of six DE/DTs left and one graduates this year, and only two of three DBs left. And it goes on. I still don't understand why CBJ didn't grab the two JUCO DTs from Kansas because they would have provided much needed short term depth (they could've been redshirted too).

Good summary. Depressing but true.

So Devrin Young is a slot receiver/screen rb? Will he still return kicks/punts, because he's a phenomenal returner.

Sounds like Jacob Carter might be the leading candidate to return punts.

I believe Carter to be the safety valve in case DY or others can't consistently make the catch. DY and Pig are both explosive but both have had some troubles, with Pig being absolutely lost at times.

I call those good/great RBs. Idk if our RBs can be on that level but they're solid and can be pretty good if they put in the work.

I'm happy with a first down average. All the backs you listed are good to great backs. I agree with you with how they need to step it up. I think tendencies didn't help them last year. They're close to being good backs. It takes skill to get 4 ypc.

Hopefully Alden Hill will take this chance he has and impresses the coaches I think he could be a good red zone and third down back. It doesn't matter because if Lane is not on the team then things are shaping up for Hurd to have an impact freshman season

Yep. But who knows. Take Lane or Neal and put them in those machines from day one, where they are receiving proper coaching from day one and who knows. Realize that these two went basically more than a year w/out any RB coaching when Chaney was OC/RB coach. Heck Neal wasn't even playing RB.

Lane could be back as early as the end of spring practice....

@Vol_Football: Jones: Alden has worked his way up there at RB. He's an individual who brings it every day.

Gurley, Yelden and Hill(maybe) came in as freshmen and were arguably the best rbs in the league. I think they are just stronger, quicker more talented backs, naturally able to hit the holes harder with better vision. Certainly finish runs better.

I agree with a lot of what you say, but I think you take the top backs in the league like Gurley, Yelden, and Lacy, give them the same running "situations" with same OL and they get a lot more than 4 per carry. I would call them above average to great backs, compared to Lane and Neal who are average SEC backs. Got a feeling we will be able to see this type of difference from the way Lane runs vs the way Hurd and Paulk next year.

We will see a difference before our eyes next year. Players do get better eventhough its hard to see. We have real coaching now!

I hope hill kills it, he was one of my favorite recruits in his class cause he bled orange from the get-go and really seemed like a good kid. maybe we can finally have a rb that doesnt shy away from contact and runs straight ahead again....
