I've been expecting the offense to start firing on all cylinders, but that is not happening. It is a crap shoot. Nico was not himself tonight, and he was consistently pressured. The run game worked at times, not others. They need to play smarter and harder instead of looking like a team on the morning after an all night toot.
My fear is that maybe Nico was himself tonight.
I'm not saying he's a bust, but but I think we bought into some fools gold up to this point.
Iowa was overrated in our bowl game and was one of those teams we just matched up well against. Kent, Chattanooga, etc are borderline HS teams. Oklahoma and NCSU are average teams that weren't playing the best QBs on their rosters at the time.
At least now we know why we stuck with Milton the whole way last year.
The lack of growth in the QB, O line, DB and WR positions is concerning.
The front 7, RBs and special teams all appear to be very well coached.
The team is a mixed bag right now, but with 3 areas of issues (QB, OL & WR) all on one side of the ball, it's going to be hard to get a lot of production. I'm limited conference play, our offense is averaging 21 PPG, and he haven't faced the best teams on our schedule yet.
It's scary that teams can get pressure/contain the run while dropping 7 and sometimes 8 guys (while mixing in the occasional blitz). I actually noticed NCSU had some success with this early, but they didn't have much talent or depth in their front 7 and we had time to get the TEs involved underneath the deep coverage.
Hopefully Nico will grow, but he left a ton of rushing yards on the field last night. When teams are dropping a lot of people back and blanketing your receivers, a lot of "take the 7-8 yards and slide" is a way to pull those guys back from the deep coverage. That is why the offense clicked with Hooker. Hooker wasn't just a good runner, he was an effective runner.
