Details on Pearl Saga

If what is posted by LV is true then it just goes to show that unless you know all the details then it's quite foolish to jump to conclusions on what might have happened as a number of posters here did for a year. Usually, the public doesn't know all the details. I'm sure Pearl would like to spill the beans on how it all went down, but he appreciates that nice paycheck from UT every week that keeps hitting his bank account.

I still find it hard to believe that the NCAA wouldn't eventually find out where the picture was taken. I would think the truth would eventually arise. What if it hadn't and Pearl got to keep his job? You think he would have some restless nights wondering if/when the NCAA would find the truth and come after him? I don't know if I would've wanted to work knowing that was out there and could come back to haunt me any day.

I think arrogance played a part in his lying, but I also think loyalty did too if what was posted is true. Whether some people think that is more CYA than loyalty then I would agree to disagree. I think he was loyal to a fault and that ultimately caused him to lie to cover his assts.

At the risk of putting words in his mouth, I think LawVol is saying that it was his understanding that the NCAA had no plans to pursue the picture any further. Pearl coming back after the original meeting is what jump-started the downfall.

That is how I understood it anyway. LV, correct me if I'm wrong there.

That's correct. That's what I was told.

Understood, I just think the truth would've eventually come out. I don't see how something like that wouldn't have seen the light of day after all the digging the NCAA would've done.

If the NCAA didn't know the location and wouldn't have followed up, then as numerous people have said, Pearl should've just lied and kept lying and he probably would've kept his job like numerous other coaches that have side stepped the NCAA.

The point I think, is that the NCAA had no plans to dig and snoop around until Pearl's confession. You seem to assume the NCAA would have kept digging, but the digging was predicated on the photo and its subject matter. If they had no plans to pursue the photo, the digging would have never taken place. This, of course, is all based on what LV was told by UT officials.

The person who delivered the photo into the hands of the NCAA had only one intent in mind. If necessary, I believe they would have followed up by forwarding the details of the photo to the NCAA. I don't think there is any way this would have resulted in any other path than the downfall of this coaching staff given the direction they all took. Everyone telling the truth up front would have been the only way this plan would have been stopped. IMO.

Lies to NCAA dunked Tennessee basketball staff GoVolsXtra

"Have you, and I apologize, this is a grainy photo that we received in our office, and I received this through e-mail just to let you know," Thompson said, looking at Pearl. "But, um, we received this picture and it purports to be you with Aaron Craft.

"Do you have any recollection of that incident or maybe where this picture was maybe taken from and..."

"That's Aaron, that's me," Pearl said. "I don't really know where that's taken."

"OK," Thompson said. "Any place on campus but you don't know?"

Glazier interjected.

"Do you recognize the woman that's in the picture?" he asked, referring to a shot of Jana Shay, the wife of Pearl's assistant coach Jason Shay, positioned with her head down in the background.

"No," Pearl said. "I really don't."

"Coach," Glazier said, "is that in your home any place?"

"No," Pearl said.

"OK," Thompson said.

And with that, the end had officially begun.

Forbes was the first to be interviewed. He questioned the quality of the photograph, which was sent anonymously via U.S. Mail to the NCAA.

"I mean it doesn't look like his house to me, but, that doesn't mean, I don't, I can't tell, no," Forbes said during his initial interview with Thompson.

Why would that question be specifically asked to two different coaches if no one had any idea it was at his house?

I can only say that it came from UT officials that talked after the fiasco was already over. They really have no reason to lie, but I guess it's possible that they did.
I don't think they lied. I think they got a version of the "truth" from someone else.

From people close to the NCAA investigation, there were a few surprising revelations that I heard. I'll summarize for you guys:

1) NCAA had no idea that the infamous picture was taken at Pearl's house until Pearl himself informed them of his lie about it.

2) Pearl lied after being approached by his assistants, who both shared their testimony with Pearl.

3) Based on that information, Pearl lied to corroborate their stories.

4) Had Pearl not gone to the NCAA, he would still have his job, and there would have been no investigation.

As an outspoken critic of Pearl, I'll be the first to admit that I was wrong on my assumptions of what went down. I feel somewhat sorry for Pearl because of the position he was put in, but the moral of the story is: don't lie to the NCAA.

I don't buy it. Craft himself said he dropped the dime on Pearl to the NCAA, which sparked the investigation.

Back it up. I followed the story like everyone else on here and this is the first time I have read this. Link?

No link. Straight from a member of the Pearl family to me--draw your own conclusion from who. Stemmed from OSU's loss to Tennessee in the Sweet-16. Craft was upset and dropped the word and the NCAA looked into it.

Never said he delivered the actual picture.

And the person that I got the info from was directly tied into the investigation. But, you've definitely got yourself a trustworthy source...

Make that '15.

Luckily, it's a relatively short drive from western KY to Evansville or some other jerkwater Horizon League school to see him at his next coaching gig.

I stand by my math, as far as when he'll be eligible. And I think most of us we'll end up missing the ole liar, whether you do or not.

Makes sense by reading posts here and by the collective IQ's in TBA the past couple years.

He'll be eligible again in August 2014. Since that's not a good time to hire a head coach, he won't be hired (if he even is) again until spring 2015 at the earliest.

It doesn't matter whether anybody misses him, or if Cuonzo doesn't work out. He won't be HC at UT ever again.

Don't crush his pipe dream.
