Devrin Young is going to be a surprise this year.

You just made my point. "He's a scholarship player, nothing more"

You are contradicting yourself. You said he isn't SEC caliber. If he is a worthy scholarship player on an SEC team then he is SEC caliber. That isn't a hard correlation to make. Maybe you should have just said "you enlightened me a bit and maybe I was overreacting"

Then people shouldn't start threads on how he's gonna surprise this year, because he's likely to not see the field but on PRs and mop up duty.

Has actual nothing to do with the criticism that he isn't worthy of a scholarship or not SEC caliber. By that logic, 70 percent of SEC players aren't SEC caliber.

It's ok to be wrong sometimes, no one is perfect

Would you offer him a scholarship with what we currently have on roster and what's coming in next year? I wouldn't. He would be fifth at best next year
behind Hurd, Kamara, Scott and Paulk. This kid would not have even gotten a sniff back in the 90's and wouldn't have with Butch either with the quality of players he's bringing in.

Love his work ethic. Love that he's from TN and a VFL but he's not an SEC caliber player, plain and simple. He's on the roster now because of Dooley and where we were as a program when Dooley was here.

9th in the SEC last year for kick returns.

I will agree he has some improvement to do.

However, what I've seen this year vs. last year is lights out.

Bookmarks this page if you want to and I'll eat crow later, but DY will be in the top five kick returners this year.

If given the chance I hope he does.

We havent seen anything this year, yet. So its hard for me to say hes lights out better.

I think we recruited better football players and athletes that will eventually eat into his mins as the season goes. But thats just my opinion. And nothing personal against DY but we need them to be a lot better to win in this league.

I'm not saying he is going to surprise. Stop referencing that in replies to my post.

Im talking about if he is worth a scholarship. Returners alone are worth scholarships, and if we aren't even going to bring his skill position abilities into the argument, then how about this. He is 3rd all time in the history of the university in kickoff return yards and he missed games in two of his three seasons.

During our heyday do you see Young getting a scholarship? Or if he were a high school senior now do you see Jones giving him a scholarship? Is a kid an SEC caliber player because he can field a punt? I hope things come together for him his final year here.

Not comparing the NFL to college football, but there is a place for small, quick backs in the modern game. I could easily see Young getting his fair share of carries, receptions, and return yards this season.

Are you saying given that we know what his abilities are at the current moment via hindsight? If so, I say that we likely would not have offered him in our heyday, but another team in the SEC most likely would have, strictly based on his skills as a returner.

You are selling him short with the "because he can field a punt?" comment. Again, he is ranked 3rd all time at UT in KR yardage and he has missed over 10 games in his career due to injury and still hasn't even played his final season.

Again, I think he is about an average SEC player overall. I just wanted to say that again before I get quoted out of context.

1. Two years under Dooley.

2. He has been giving it his all during camp. Source: coaches and teammates.

3. Look at the film.

4. Michael Palardy.

5. Who the eff are you to judge this young man?

I'm not judging him in any way. I am giving my opinion of his football ability. Please don't try to villainize me out of emotion. To the best of my knowledge, he hasn't cracked the 2 deep at rb since he has been at UT. He also made no impact at WR. I love the kid, and hope great things for him, including a season where he plays out of his mind, but if you will notice, our leading receiver from last year came back in even better shape and still has a gang of dudes clawing at his spot. We have a freshman running back who can turn on the jets, "followed" by a senior who has been ahead of Young since day 1. Am I being irrational??? I just don't think the kid is a difference maker. Just my opinion. Darick Rogers was an arrogant, self entitled cancer to the program. That is judgment.

Some of you "senior members" must be real seniors. Don't be so hateful because you had to walk up hills both ways, gas is not 5 cents a gallon, and Matlock was cancelled. Drink your ensure and just relax.

This thread has nothing to do with age diaper boy. It's all about stupidity.

Taking a swing at older Vol fans is uncalled for and makes absolutely no sense at all.

To add your own special touch of stupidity, please note: it says "senior member" under your user name. The irony must have gone right over your head. :eek:lol::eek:lol::eek:lol:

Nice clip. I remember him making a few of those type catches last year in practice as well.

I dont get too caught up in circus catches in fall camp. Especially ones that your starters make and continue running after the catch routinely.

DY is a great kid and nowhere did I mention anything that you should take that he sucks. But it appears that the staff thinks they have recruited better athletes and players to this point, and thats hard to argue really.

Im sure they have a play or 2 tucked away that you may see on occasion, but I dont expect him to find his way into the rotation unless we have some injuries. His contributions will mainly be in the return game.

I really am disapointed in both of these developments. We will all see with our very eyes if Josh smith comes out looking like crap like he did last year and little guy continues to trip and fall. Don't understand why Wharton or Evan Berry isn't returning punts or perhaps Malone.

Freak, how come there's not a "Thumbs Down" (dislike) button on VN?

We brought in a lot of good recruits who I thought would be better too, right? We'll see but I'm expecting nothing from either one.

Do you actually watch/read the practices or are you going off what everyone else says. E. Mosley (freshman db) runs a 4.3 and stated he couldn't keep up with J. Smith, I am hoping he has a great year if he does you guys will be the first ones saying you believed.

Thanks for being optimistic. GO VOLS

Coach dickey always said there are three types of players, players that win for you, players that don't get you beat, and players that get you beat. At best, dy is a player that doesn't get you beat. We need someone dynamic and can win games in the return game. It's a loser mentality to put a guy back that simply just catches the ball. That's Dooley ball.

Well whoopity doo.....I will believe it when I see it. Short leash for the young man if it was me. Too many better options.....

I made a catch on the beach earlier this summer against air as well....jeez....

Players like Young and Howard are the type that make go many of the best spread offensives in college football--guys who get the ball in space, elude tackles, make good yardage.

I sure hope you're right. It may be beneficial to his game to have so much talent and playmakers around him now.

On a side note, my break out guy is Josh Smith, I think the guy catches 30+ passes for 500+ yards and several TDs with some very very important catches through the season
