Did anyone ever try to hire Fulmer away?

I remember reading that in 1992 when Fulmer took over for Majors after Johnny's heart attack, South Carolina and Arkansas supposedly made offers. After Majors resigned/got fired, university administration was afraid Fulmer would take most of the staff and recruits with him to one of those schools. So they hired him as a solution to the mess.

I believe after 98, he was approached by some NFL teams

To me, he would only have left for the NFL. I don't think he would have gone anywhere else to coach college. I think he would have made a damn good NFL coach. Then again, what do i know?

I remember numerous colleges coming after Fulmer but they all knew he was a Tennessee guy and wasn't leaving. Some pro teams came after him also but he always turned them down. Fulmer was a lot more loyal to Tennessee than Tennessee was to Fulmer

Do you remember any of the colleges?

I just have one thing to say. Jimmy Sexton agent poop is the worse thing to happen to Tn since he graduated. He has screwed TN more than the cowboys at the bunny ranch.

Arkansas perhaps. They were looking for a coach that year. But I find it hard to believe that South Carolina was just offering our interim coach the head coaching job at their school, while they still had a head coach and didn't even replace him until after another season.

His name came up several times for NFL jobs. Not sure if it was his agent putting that out or if there was interest in him. He would have never left for another college job though.

Have not seen many programs breaking his door down to hire him since he was booted. Kinda speaks for itself , in my opinion.

In his heyday he was a bit like the prized recruit that doesn't get any offers b/c he shut his recruiting down early. It doesn't mean he wasn't wanted it just meant everyone knew he wasn't interested. I think he let it be known that he'd only consider the NFL and the NFL never came calling. His stock obviously dropped a lot between 2001 and 2008 but if he had left in the late 90's or early 2000s he would have gotten another major college job. His winning % was too good to ignore.

No. I cannot recall his name being mentioned seriously in any coaching hire through the years.

Through probably 2001 I would think it would have been useless for anyone to offer him. After he started losing, he was seen as a coach who's day has passed and gone.
After he "stepped down" his attitude killed any change he had of being hired at a major college.
His "I will be interviewing the school more than they will be interviewing me " was a beyond stupid comment to make.

There were rumors. One was about Texas that he supposedly turned down before Mack Brown took over. Another was about the Cleveland Browns.

Not true! He was asked during a presser about coachingbin the NFL and his exact words were "I would listen to what they have to say".

Add in "the right situation"! Most schools who need a coach also need a rebuilding job. Not someone to come in and bring the program down!

I think it is nonsense to presume that tons of teams would not have wanted Fulmer in his heyday. Get real. I don't remember college teams coming after Spurrier either. It was their alma mater, no school would out pay the other if it came to a bidding war, etc. Also, as a poster has mentioned, it was a different time, before all the internet rumors and coaches flying their names for every job to get a raise.

You would have to be in some serious state of Fulmer hate to think teams did not or would not kick the tires on him in 90's. I know for a fact that when he was OC there were two schools who tried to hire him as HC

East Carolina and Arkansas or the schools that have been reported.

If Fulmer was to ever coach again, it might be at ETSU where he is consulting with the football program.

He was such a true VFL that he made UT stay 'loyal' to the buyout clause. What a guy! Take the Vols for all he could.

Do you realize how big a moron one would have to be to ignore their buyout clause in the name of something as dumb as the concept of "VFL"?

I cant remember back that far, but did any big programs try and talk to Fulmer and hire him away from Tennessee? I would tend to think not because he was such a Tennessee guy. but his resume was outstanding in the 90's and into the early 2000's. I know the coaching carousel was not nearly the same as it is now, but i was wondering if anyone could remember any other schools that came calling? I figured i would ask since everyone is paranoid about other schools poaching our current staff.

He was offered several NFL assistant jobs in the 80's and early 90's.

I had always heard prior to the season he took over for Majors he was possibly going to leave for a HC gig if Majors didn't step down and let Fulmer rise to the HC @ UT.
