I have a Facebook friend that is A friend of Fulmer.
The friend and Coack went to a Broncos game together and he took this pic. Thought it was cool.

Man I sure wish Phil could've left the university differently. I was born in 87, so prior to that tool bag Kiffin, Fulmer WAS UT football to me. I'm thankful for all the wonderful memories I have of UT during his tenure.

I don't know if anyone tried to hire him away or not.
I do know that my days of taking pot shots at the man are over.
Thanks for all you did, Phil.

Heard Jim Donnan speak about Fulmer. He said there has never been another coach who loved being the Head Coach of his alma mater more than Fulmer loved being the HC at Tennessee.

After his speech, did he excuse himself,go outside and rob a Brinks truck?

I had always heard prior to the season he took over for Majors he was possibly going to leave for a HC gig if Majors didn't step down and let Fulmer rise to the HC @ UT.

Phil actually interviewed for HC job at some small college in NC but did not get the job (maybe turned it down, who knows). But the next year Johnny had a heart attack and Phil led the young team to some stunning upsets and the rest is history

I believe after 98, he was approached by some NFL teams

THis....he WAS NOT going to leave Tennessee for any other college job in the country and they knew it...the NFL tried several times but obviously with no success...

Funny people have trashed Fulmer on here. Yet ever since he was fired, we have been in the tank.

Yes, and in large part because of his doings during his last 4 years. He certainly had a large part in starting the free fall.

Fulmer was a HOF coach his first 10 years at UT.

He was a mediocre at best coach his last 6.

It was time for him to go. The mistake wasn't in firing Fulmer. The mistake was made in making a questionable hire in Kiffin, and then following that mistake up with the debacle that was Dooley.

some pro teams, but why would another college team come...UT at the time had the best facilties and best support. Fulmer was a great coach, the late years he let some things slip, but it happens with every program....look at Mack Brown and Bowden. Fulmer was the man if you dont like that statement you dont understand football. The way all 3 of these legends and HOF were forced out is pathetic.

We only thought we were in the tank. This is much easier to see now that we have spent a few years under the tank.

As a Tennessee fan there were times that I complained about play calling while Fulmer was coach. At times it seemed like we were out coached towards the end. I guess you can put that on poor recruiting near the end. But I was always a Fulmer guy. I think maybe he was fired to quickly. Or maybe they waited to long. Who knows. But one thing is for sure. There was a time that most schools would have been lucky to have him. But with the Tennessee program being what it was in the 90's I'm not so sure now if Fulmer was a great coach or just a good leader of great talent. Hope that makes sense. Maybe he was just lucky to be where he was at the time.

I think Fulmer was a good coach who was helped by great co-ordinators, Chavis and Cutcliff, When Cutcliff wasn't there, they often struggled offensively, and Chavis often had top 10 defenses (and still does, although the early departures for the pros from LSU tend to hurt him some there).

He was such a true VFL that he made UT stay 'loyal' to the buyout clause. What a guy! Take the Vols for all he could.

Hamilton didn"t exactly show any loyalty to Fulmer, and after the way Hamilton handled that, I can't say that blame him that much for taking the money. It is only unfortunate that it did not come from Hamilton instead of the University.

No.

People need to realize that what happened with Lane Kiffin was the product of a number of special circumstances (USC being in a tough bind, Lane having absolutely no scruples, Hamilton not understanding how to negotiate a contract, etc.) and it was a dumb move that both schools obviously regret. It's very unlikely to happen to us ever again.

I do sort of wonder if Butch does well in the next couple of years, and the Michigan or Mich. State job come open (or even the Lions) if he might take one of those to be closer to home. No need to be concerned about that for a little while, I guess.

I remember reading once that Cutcliffe was surprised at the lack of discipline, effort, and attention to detail that the team showed, from his previous time here. I honestly believe that Cutcliffe was the brains and the glue that held it together, and kept the team from slacking.

I think that it was time for Fulmer to go, and 2 bad hires definitely set us back a bunch. It is unfortunate. I wish that he could have stayed, but to think that he could be competitive now??? I don't think so. We started our slide a long time before 2008.
