Explain "the barrel head of the bat passes the batter's front hip". Let me add this the ump so no swing so it was a no swing.

Is that where the "batter's front hip" is with the normal stance (before swinging) or when they turn to actually swing to make contact?

Option 2 is wrong and should be worded differently…the rule reads as this…

NCAA 2-39 Half Swing

Half Swing

SECTION 39. An attempt by the batter to stop the forward motion of the bat while swinging, which puts the batter in jeopardy of a strike being called. The half swing shall be called a strike if the barrel head of the bat passes the batter’s front hip. This does not apply to a bunt attempt when the batter pulls the bat back.

Crossing home plate has nothing to do with anything…where do you guys get this nonsense from…lol
I have seen hundreds of BASICALLY identical situations called both ways. Maybe the most ambiguous rule in the book. Is it the bat passing the hip with swing action still going forward? The intent to strike the ball has clearly been stopped and breaks applied before the bat gets to that point.

Anybody got any umpire advisories or interpretations on this rule. Training aids? They are usually around somewhere in football.

Hard to have an intelligent discussion without some serious rule clarification.

Do we need to start thread that list all the times we were screwed over the last 20 years. It sickens me to thank that nearly 20 percent of Volnation thinks we should have lost this game...shameful!

FSU fans will always think it was a bad call and I don't think we can blame them for feeling that way. But it's also true that If the roles were reversed, they'd be just as happy as we are -- and unapologetic. After all, it the umpire's call and that's the way the game goes. And they'd be right.

It could've gone either way and we were fortunate to be on the good end of it. They still have to live with the fact that they were one out away with a 2-run lead and couldn't seal the deal. What's done is done and it's in the books.
Well said. I’d be frustrated if the roles reversed, stating “my Vols can’t ever get a call or break in a big game.” The self pity would’ve set in.

It could have gone either way, just like about 30 other calls. That's baseball. I'm apparently in the minority, but I thought that was one of the more consistently called games I've seen this year.
Me too. I thought Blue was consistent with the strike zone for both team.

I don’t think people appreciate how difficult it is to call a game behind the plate. Plus, every strike or ball is scrutinized with replay.

ESPN, while showing Vol highlights of one of the most amazing baseball games in UT's history, wanted to make sure everyone saw Blake Burke (supposedly??) holding back his swing with two strikes and two outs in the bottom of the ninth. (ESPN really loves us, don't they?) Sooooo, what say you Vol Nation?

Where was the camera? Makes a big difference.

This is my take. I understand the game would’ve been over and the rest doesn’t matter but they still had a chance to get BB out, or BA out or DD out and they failed 3 more times to do that.

He did not break his wrists. The plate location is different based on where you are standing in the box, can't use that. 4 straight hits with 2 outs most with 3-2 counts and they want to say at a 50/50 call beat them?LOL!

Sitting watching the replay due to the weather delay while reading the forum and looked up just as the live video and the play in question took place. Instinctively, without even thinking about it said to myself that’s not a strike not even realizing that was the play in question.

I umpired for several years and had I been at third he would have been out. Sorry guys. (or for that matter behind the plate)

If I’m FSU I’m not pleased with the call. I get it.
Tennessee has zero control of the call. Tennessee didn’t cheat, they simply benefited from the call of no swing.
Everyone will see it differently based on their desired outcome.
There were plenty of calls that I wish had gone the other way in this game, as with most.
The Noles had ample opportunities to win that game. Up by 3 in the bottom of the 9th. That call will not diminish my jubilation of winning that game. We have been on the opposite end of that call many times. GBO!
