Did Blake Burke Swing or Not Swing at the controversial pitch?

It’s odd that last night there was an overhead, behind the plate view on a check swing but not Friday night.

I actually don’t think he swung. That dugout view was the only one that made it look close. Live I didn’t think it was even close.

2 umpires didn’t think it was.

And there was no view from down the baseline that would have been definitive

I always heard it’s a strike if the 3rd base ump can see the bat head and not just barrel. Go with that and the batter has to have gone around. That seems a lot simpler than looking to 3rd to see whether the bat head has passed the batter’s front knee. It’s just one of those rules where the ump has to judge intent and no one cares until it goes the way you don’t want, in a key moment.

Link Jarrett:

"Every pitch matters in these games. And you saw the result of those. Every pitch. We did not play well enough to separate. It was ugly early. We had chances to record outs, we didn't. It wasn't crisp enough on the mount at all times. Thought (Conner) Whittaker pitched great, I thought Jamie (Arnold) battled. But they (Tennessee) delivered the result."

Batters do not appeal checked swings. If the home plate umpire calls it a swing, then it is ruled a strike. An appeal can only be made by the defense if the home plate official rules it a checked swing/ball. The catcher would then appeal to the first base or third base umpire for a ruling. The field umpire will then either uphold the checked swing call or overrule it and call it a strike.

Once again called check swing. Stop beating a dead horse.

Just by watching multiple games and crews in the tourney (or even just Blake Burke’s check swing rulings), it’s a call in the gray area and not consistently ruled. Spot judgment call by the umps…fortunately this one that really mattered went our way.
