Did one of kidnap Cspin and emain

Most people in their 30s I would say have not seen a bad economy. Dips for sure, but not bad. The last real bad one I would say was in the late 70s/early 80s. I was just a kid so don't really know how bad it was but it seemed fairly lousy.

Absolutely right, you consider where this country was after 9/11 and what economically has proceeded. Our economy has done quite well. Obviously some on here, weren't around thru the Carter administration.

Which President would be responsible for Carter's bad economy? If I understand everyone correctly a President's policies take years to affect the economy.

I don't think it was all Carter's fault, but he clearly was not the guy to lead the country back to prosperity either. Go read his "Malaise" Speech and tell me if he sounds like the kind of guy who could inspire anybody to do jack.

I was trying to get somebody on that one. I know he wasn't much of a leader but he seems to be a nice enough guy though.

Despite his slow drawl, he's probably one of the more intelligent men to ever hold the office, but that didn't stop him from being a horrific leader and fundamentally wrong on most issues.

For the most part thats correct, some exceptions have taken place thru the years. But, I would say that more than anything it was the overall feeling of lethargy. Americans didn't spend, becuase they didn't trust, helping the stock market slowed down to a crawl. Carter was smart, as I think anyone who ascends to the Presidency is a very educated person, but he was also very naive. When he came to power the economy was on a slight rise, when he left it was in a free-fall. The "malaise" was due to some bad luck, some failings of the previous administration, but mostly at the end of the day was lack of strong leadership.

Things were trending down when he took office. If I remember correctly, Ford used "WIN" buttons (Whip Inflation Now) so inflation was kicking in.

The problem with the Carter administration is that things just got worse and there appeared to be no plan to righten the economy. We had inflation with no economic growth (stagflation). Interest rates were historically high. We then had a pretty heavy recession in 81/82 - a couple years after his administration. Ironically, Knoxville was spared from the early brunt of the recession due to the Worlds Fair propping up the local economy. It hit pretty good afterwards though. Carter's group was completely ineffective with regard to the economy (and foreign policy and pretty much everything else it seemed).

In contrast, Reagan's policies helped bring us out of the recession.
