Discussions to fire Malzahn?

only thing I can think of is Malzahn believes next year will be better/good enough to keep him around.

even if agreed I would still want some very specific language on how long I could stay as Malzahn.

Even if he thinks next year will be better, why agree to the changes? There is absolutely no benefit for him.

I would think. He has an enforceable contract. The school can't unilaterally tear it up.
If he doesn't think he's going to make it to the end of his current deal, or even the back end of his current deal, he should refuse to make the changes they want him to make and they can fire him. We're talking $32m versus $49m (if he made it the full 7 years), and he'd get $32m for just working one year!

I know CFB is a big deal at big football schools. I see why schools pay top coaches $10m per year. However, what I still don't understand is how they have the leverage to command buyouts of this size. If Auburn wants Gus to go away after one year, they owe him 65% of the total contract amount. It's absolutely insane.

at this point I don't know. Auburn has made it clear they are going to fire him.
Well he is recruits damaged goods that this stuff is out in the open. SEC recruiting. Coaches in this league will negative recruit against the Gus Bus saying he wont be around long.

Is it possible that maybe a backdoor deal to avoid taxes might have been done by boosters? Offshore account payment? Guaranteed high price for his house?

Totally possible. Rumor has it that Bama boosters did something like that for Saban after the 2012 season. Not offshore accounts, but helped get him out from some real estate deals that had gone bad.

I think I heard something about that, didn't they buy a house he sunk a lot of money into or something?

The boosters might have also offered him a lump sum percentage of the difference too.

Yeah - rumor was they purchased a bunch of property from him that Saban had bought previously and was way underwater on.

Who knows if the details were accurate, but if they did do something like that it is hardly surprising. Texas boosters tried to do an end-around their own AD and offer Saban something like a $100m contract. The extension he ended up accepting from Alabama had a total comp significantly less than that $55m, but there supposedly was additional comp coming his way too.

There's lots of rumors. A fact that's fairly open is that some boosters paid off his mortgage several years ago.
