Ditch The Zone Read Running Game

5-6 yard hot slants needed to balance and give Worley an out quickly... in three games I have seen maybe 2. Worley has been given the green light to run it anytime he sees fit according to a Bajakain interview, so Worley is not making very good decisions at times. I agree with you on all of the O line breakdown.

Also, we have GOT to shut down that slow developing bubble screen pass cap.... unless you have two other WR blocking, the LB or nickel crashes in and nails Alton on almost every play....

And this is why there are far more Wendys fry cooks than there are college football coaches.

...but that fits because there are two things all men think we know more about than any other man: Grilling burgers and football.

Nice analysis. I'd be happy if Worley kept it and ran 2-3 times a game. I can think of 2-3 times the other night when it might have made a big difference.

The first couple of games he did. As many hits as he took against OK, I'm glad he didn't.

I thought it was a great post. We are hurting our run game by making the running back stop to get the ball, instead of letting him build up steam while taking a classic handoff. Espicially since theres only a 5% chance our QB is gonna actually keep it.

This is this staff's 'second' year. Two, Dos, Deux, Два, zwei, 2! the zone read brings a dynamic that is useful at freezing defenders, when you have a running threat. Worley will watch film and hopefully run one or two more times. That being said, Asking a coaching staff that has a history together to throw away what they know to fit the skill set of what they have been left, is a bit much. Think bringing in the 3-4 when we recruited for a 4-3 for 30 years, that didn't go over well. We will take some lumps, even as i hoped we wouldn't, but we have to show patience (even though it feels like we have been rebuilding for 15 years). All these young guy's brought in, are Butch's kids. They will leave just as soon as we (the irrational fan base) chase him off. I am as guilty of this as anyone on here, i am quick to critique but quick to compliment. My rational thinking happens after i sober up. GBO!!!

1. Our run game would be the same or worse running an I formation.
2. Most of the runs aren't run options to Worley, theyre either hand it off or pass.
3. That terrible scheme was the best since 2004 last year.
4. I do think we should pull a guard or use a TE more just to help the o line out a bit.

This is where I am. Based on the relatively strong running performance last year, it seems like a solid O-line is more critical to the offense's success then a mobile QB or a different scheme. The scheme can work, they just need the players. The correct players doesn't necessarily mean a mobile QB but it does mean a solid OL.

I'm not ready to blame CBJ's recruiting for the o-line problems yet although I do have concerns. OL recruiting is really the only concern I have with this staff's recruiting. It's possible though he's already recruited those kids (like Thomas and Robertson) and they just need to develop or he has some of them committed for this year. 2 years just isn't enough time to tell. We'll see.

Football experts said TN read the read option wrong 70% of the time last yr. With Worley playing it was even worse.

If they were football experts they would know we don't run the true read option. It's a simple handoff from the start 99% of the time.

I would like to see it go by by just because I personally don't like it. If I want to watch this style offense I can go watch just about any high school game in the country. I like the pro style offense myself. Jmo

majic73 You keep telling everyone this isn't a zone read. It is a zone read all day. When you leave a defensive lineman unblocked and the QB reads what he's doing, taking the back or him it's a zone read or read option whichever you would like to call it.
Your claim that the QB isn't suppose to keep the ball and the back has the option where to run is wrong. The back might have the option to break outside or up the middle but the QB has the option to keep it before. If you claim was correct the defensive coordinator would just have defensive end tackle the back every play. If the QB isn't suppose to run it why account for him? If he's only suppose to keep it two to three times a game have the end tackle the back every play and a DB can tackle the QB after a ten yard game. You only give up 20 to 30 yards rushing per game all to the QB.
We ARE running a zone read or the coach wouldn't keep saying he needs to keep it more to keep defense honest. Your the only one , our coaches included that thinks Worley shouldn't be running it more.

What do you consider pro style?

What "expert" said that? Every qb has a different threshold for what he's looking for.

For example:

If you're Michael Vick in his prime, I want you to keep if the DE even looks inside.

If you're Worley, I only want you to keep if thy DE comes hard inside to where he can make a play on the RB. And that's rarely happened this season.

I say that for a true shocker they do something in the Georgia game that has the Bulldog Defense puzzled all to hell.

Come out in a Wishbone set and just run the ball down their throats for 4 quarters.

Sadly, I think you're being serious

Why do u think it gets blown up 90% of the time. They know its almost always just a hand off

It gets blown up because our offensive line is bad.

Everyone knows Alabama and USCjr are goin to run zone. It seems to work fine for them.

It's actually harder on the defense because the lbs don't know which way the ball is going.

Ordinarily I don't agree with Tux but he is right on here. The zone read is only effective when you have a QB that is mobile. We don't and we are recruiting predominantly pro style QBs. The offense would be better by utilizing a FB and running out of an I formation. Now if you have the right personnel to execute the zone read then it can be effective. However we don't.

I believe our rushing attack would flourish with a FB.

We play with a FB most of the time. And no you don't need a mobile qb to do this. Look at USCjr or almost every team in the NFL. I even saw the Steelers running zone read last week.
