Do not tell me

As Bobby Dodd said a long time ago, we should always keep in mind the performance of our opposition as we critique the efforts of our program. South Carolina was superb that night, with a strong game plan and excellent morale. They demonstrated a great deal of that against Clemson yesterday. Hats off to the Ass Kickin' Chickens for what they have been able to accomplish at the end of this season.

Then we look at our own, see the performance from South Carolina, and assess the response.

Every coach has a moment where things just do not go to plan and every single thing falls apart. I saw Spurrier get absolutely jackhammered by Mississippi State in Starkville. He had no answers for Joe Lee Dunn's defense. Things got so bad, he decided to punt on 3rd and 31 rather than take his usual approach. Things ended up fine for them. They didn't cease being an SEC elite-level program because of that game.

This team could have done something like Ole Miss with Kiffin and spent this Vanderbilt game feeling sorry for themselves. Instead, they responded as good teams do when they've taken a beating. They dominated this game and did exactly what a Top 10 program should do to a Vanderbilt.

Disappointed with the South Carolina game? No doubt.

Pleased with the maturity and mental discipline reflected in this response? Hell yeah! Bodes well for the future of the program under this head coach, the players currently on the roster, and those who are soon to arrive at Tennessee.
I went to state in 2000 for that Florida game. I’ll never forget spurrier punting that. They had lost the ball on an exchange and gotten it back to like a 3rd and forever and spurrier just punted it to get out that end of the field. Wildest thing I’ve seen in person at a game other than the music bowl ending that didn’t end game.

That this defense was actually this bad last week. There was locker room problems. I blame no one but Heupel for not fixing everything before the SC game no matter the problem.

You can blame him all you want, regardless of that blame, he’s our best coach since Kiffin, maybe since Fulmer.

From my armchair QB position, our OC tried to ice the SC game waaaay too early with long passes on first down. Playing in a hostile environment with only 2 downs to get 10 yards is gonna make your Defense exhausted. When you go long on first or second down and don't complete the pass, you also lose the effectiveness of a hurry up offense. It is my opinion that our game plan on offense was a big of a culprit to the Colombian Massacre as any other.

When you hear that Vol fans are belligerent idiots, this is the sorta thing they're talking about.

We just had our first 10 win season since '07, and we're going for 11 wins for the first time since '01.

.... and this is what we're talking about?

Good grief man. I'm embarrassed.
I'm pretty sure he was being sarcastic. If so, does that make you the "belligerent idiot"?

Read it like this: No extension, and White needs to let him know he's on the hot seat.

It was written in response to another message that should be read like this: We should demand a paycut from Heupel for this.

Whatever happened is clearly resolved, in years past it would have destroyed the team, I saw in another post that the issue from last week whatever it was may have happened right before they were leaving for SC, if true it could explain some of the unpreparedness in that game, I think we have a great coach, lets not ruin it.

Dude how about credit him with the bounce back and give a little credit to South Carolina who has gotten better. We had a unfortunate set of events happen at end of the week plus South Carolina had a great game plan. It happens sometimes. Look at all the upsets this week. Credit the staff to having them ready tonight and credit the staff and players for a great year. We went 10-2 and no you wasn’t expecting it when the year started either. GBO!!!!

when we were playing our game, there’s no one better.
I think we tried that against Georgia and got smacked around. Truthfully, we are light years ahead of schedule and much more competitive than anyone (including me) thought we would be. But saying we are the best when we play our game is crazy.
Everyone can say that.
Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the nose and when we did get punched, we bled and lost.
Our offense is second to none. Our defense is last in division one. They don’t offset and make use unstoppable .

Georgia isn’t as good as advertised. If the team that played Kentucky or LSU or Bama shows up against UGA-we win. We choked. Twice. Obviously we weren’t the best when we choke…

Our defense doesn’t allow us to be in the best team category. Keep pushing it all you want, but the stats and truth speak louder than what you see through orange glasses.

Literally just shut OUT Vanderbilt. And very few teams have been effective at scoring on us when our defense was playing well.

I saw the way we played Bama and LSU. I know what we have.

Does Heupel get sole credit for the ten wins, then, or is it only the blame that doesn't get shared?
That's actually the prine tenant of great leadership: Credit for success goes to your people, blame for failure falls squarely on you.

No one will ever convince me that the defense in the SC game did not let them score 8 of 9 possessions. It's almost impossible to play that bad unless you are trying to. Having said that, I'm not sure what Heupel could have done ? how could he have known they were going to lay down pre game time ? I blame the defense coaches for not making adjustments during the game and also immature players who put their selfish paybacks over a great opportunity to shine on the national spotlight. If I was Heupel I'd be looking around for a seasoned defensive coordinator with a stellar resume

LOL. I refuse to believe that a defensive unit would deliberately lay down in protest over the way some every-day locker room squabble was handled with a chance at a national championship on the line. Even if the way it was handled or the impact itself was felt, those guys would have shelved that for the moment and gone out there to try to play their best, and try to resolve the squabble later. It's more likely that everything broke in favor of SC in that game (Banks being out, Rattler gets hot, Hooker not quite sharp, great offensive game plan for the chickens, etc), and the defense got completely demoralized after so many scores and felt it was fultile and gave up after a while.

We gave up FORTY NINE to Bama. That is not a sterling defensive performance.

I could believe what you're saying if the game had been close. But when a 6-4 SC scores on every possession but 1 that tells me there has to be other factors.

We will never know. Bottom line, unlike Butch in 2016, Heupel didn’t let it fester or grow and got er done seven days later.
Playing mentally tough on the road is the next step in the team’s growth. With the sole exception of LSU, this team didn’t look nearly as sharp on the road. Next year, with Florida and Bama on the road, we have great opportunities to change that.

You can put it all on Heupel if you like. Anyone who has ever managed people or been in a mentor position knows that despite your efforts those people will fall short. Everyone is human and that is just how it is. But you also have to put in on Heupel for having his team ready this week despite the SC game. Can’t blame him for the loss and not credit him for the win.
