CBP was "Joe Six-pack". Almost everyone could relate to the guy and he was very engaging when he spoke; he wasn't an ordinary guy but acted like one to the fans and most likely recruits and their families. That and success equal an admiring "southern" fan base. It wouldn't have mattered if he was from Nome or Rome. IMO

I know where you are coming from, but this guy will stand on his own; sink or swim. I'm not big on the "family tree" mentality.

I have no problem with the hire.

However, until this year he has not had much success and he was not coaching in one of the major conferences. I understand UT was limited in hiring a big name coach because of the NCAA sanctions that the college is facing. I don't understand why this coach deserved essentially a million dollar raise to hire him, on such a limited track record. I would have thought about $800,000 would have been more realistic for this coach instead of 1.3 million.

That is extremely unfair to the new coach. Donovan and Calapiri have 4 or 5 5 star players at any given time while UT has 2, and that is stretching it. The man has never coached against an SEC team of course he has a lot to learn. I would predict he does not win one game against either program during his first 3 seasons which eliminates any possibility of a championship. If the job is to take a group of misfits and consistently beat the teams with talent then you are correct, we chose the wrong guy. If you say he will bring 5 star players here, I will believe it when I see it.

WOnder what the poll results were after Bruce Pearl was hired? How many people had heard of him and knew what he was about? Just remember, Mike krzeswki (sp) had a losing record when Duke hired him in 1980...

I think everyone knew Bruce Pearl as he became famous after consecutive high finishes in the NCAA tournament plus he was the top guy on evryone's list. I did not have to google him. I thought at the time it was a lateral hire, Buzz 2. The only attribute he had was experience by shear number of games coached. His experience ended up making his learning curve short. I expect Coach Martin's curve to be much longer. Not a knock.

I would also like to see those poll results. However at the time Pearl was hired, we sucked. Now we don't suck so obviously many people think we could've done better. I personally like the hire and will support him while taking a wait and see apprach to see if he's the right guy for us.
