I like that he's been a fighter all his life

yep

and this from the Prudue fam post

"Painter is one of the Elite young coaches and a former Boiler so he's in the Gene Keady level of popularity in Boiler Land. I asked my dad what he thought about Martin becoming our coach and he said if Painter was to leave there is only two guys Purdue fans wanted to replace him; Cuonzo Martin or Coach Keady to return."

I support Martin for one simple fact, he wanted to be a Vol.I have no idea who UT contacted or if they offered the job to anyone else but I do know that Martin wanted it and that's enough for me to give him a chance.

As good a reason as any.

He hails from East St. Louis, Ill., which will never be confused with Beverly Hills.====STREET CRED...I like him even more now!!!

I will give our new BB coach a chance - he turned around Missouri St, but his resume is very very thin compared to Pearl's when he was hired.

Pearl had been a winner over many years and at two different schools, winning a NC at lower lever (Indy State). He not only won big at Tennessee he brought enthusiasm to program thru fired up students and fans - he filled the arena and that alone paid his salary. For six years Pearl cost the university nothing (net) and he took winning to levels never achieved prior. I wish coach Pearl success and happiness in the future - I am glad he was our coach for the last six years.

Coach Martin will first need to (a) keep as many of current players and committed recruits as possible as a first test of his recruiting ability and (b) put together an impressive staff, (c) bring in some new talent so we can compete in SEC East, (d) get fan support united behind him and (e) lastly of course comply with the NCAA rules, even stupid ones like no BBQ for jr's at coaches home.

Yes, given the circumstances. We just weren't going to get a proven commodity with sanctions on the way. Doesn't matter how much money we threw out there. This is a Dooley-type hire. Risk, but definitely potential up-side.

So UT fans should now be Painter/Purdue fans?

Boiler fan here and someone stated above that we would take him if Painter left (God Forbid) and I totally agree. Believe me Cuonzo has the will to win. He lead a team during Purdue's 3-pete era that was not supposed to do anything and they won the Big Ten and had a showing in the NCAA's. Now I will warn you... it won't be Pearl's run and gun style by any means but I think the team is definitely in good hands.

Almost seems to me that there wasnt any thought put into it...just ...well we need a coach go hire one...so they hired a "coach"....just so happens I had never heard of him before...

With a reported profit if over 100 million dollars , I wish they would have made a larger offer to Brad Stevens , Hamilton seems to bid low on coaches and expectations...

I don't like Dooley-Type hires in either case lol.

We played him this year.
Did you watch our games?

I'm not sure he's the best available option, but he might turn out to be great. We definitely could have been worse.

My problem with this hire is that we are in the SEC and most of the players we get are from GA, AL, MS, TN etc in the south. This guy is a mid west guy and he has no pedigree in the south. I guess time will tell. I hope its a great hire. He does have one thing going for him when it come to getting talent to come to tennessee and thats i've been to the NBA and i know how to get there come to tennessee and i'll show you. other than that Go vols and Good luck Coach Zo.:loco:

from what i've read about him, i like him. i hate the hire, however. it may turn out to be a great hire in the long run, and i will absolutely give him my support. i just think the hire was beyond underwhelming and that, at this point, mike hamilton has botched yet another coaching hire.
